DRSWC 5: The Track!
Start of the 400 meter/fast heat One of my goals for the trip out to Oregon and Washington was to run at Hayward Field. This track holds a near mythical place in the hearts of America's track fans. From as early as I have watched track, Hayward Field has been the center of America's track world. Now, I have gotten to run there!

Making up the stagger around the first turn, Pat "Paddy Wagon" Mitchell shoots past Ted Glenn in the DRSWC 5 400 Meter Challenge. Ted made that classic triathlete's mistake, substituting shopping for training. It didn't work, but he did get a good pair of spikes for his efforts. I wonder what the GPS numbers are for Hayward Field?

Coming in to the finish of the 400 meter. The DRS 400 meter was hotly contested. The Pat "Paddy Wagon" Mitchell blasted into an early lead and held on to be the first DRS finisher, breaking the 60 second barrier.

Just off Pat's shoulder, also breaking 60, was Doug "Ice Tray" Hutchenson. Not quite breaking 60, but taking third place, was Karl Wantanabe.

Paddy Wagon One of my more interesting sprint techniques I have seen, but who can argue with success! The Paddy Wagon sprints to the finish, showing his award-winning form.

The Mile
The Mile! The Mile being run at Hayward Field! The race of legends, run at the track of legends! This photo shows the fast heat of the mile passing the famous backstretch at Hayward Field. No amount of cheering and stomping the feet could get me to speed up. That is me, comfortably cruising along in last place. I guess the proper taper for the mile doesn't include a week of tromping aound the wilderness
Moscow Saw The races were finally done, we sat in the backstretch grandstands, of Hayward Field, and the sound of bagpipes began. Sam "Moscow Sam" Scripter appeared in the top level of the stands, playing his bagpipe, while wearing his DRS tee-shirt.

Sam played while the Deads gathered for a slow walk around the track. With Sam leading the way, DRS did its lap to honor the legend of Hayward Field.

After posing for the goup photo, we left Hayward Field, after taking one last long look around.
