My Office... Last summer my wife and I decided to move my office from the upstairs extra bedroom (which is 24' x 18' by the way, and had magnificant views of Pikes Peak and the Air Force Acadamy), into the extra bedroom in the basement (just a few feet from my pool table and big screen television, ohoh!)
Now I'm in a 10' x 15' room with only one basement window, and can't say I'm very happy about it.  There's a good reason for me to get out of that upstairs room, however: it makes an excellent nursary for our new baby. (We went with a Winnie-the-pooh theme. Very cute.)

Here's the current layout: office floorplan The office PC was recently upgraded.  I'm now running an MIT (made in taiwan) with a new PCI localbus motherboard carrying:

  • ADM K6 200mhz MXX chip (down with Intel!)
  • 32 meg RAM (never seems like enough)
  • Two 1.2 gig hard drives (ditto)
  • An 8x CD & Opti 16 bit sound (TURN IT UP)
  • Yamaha speakers & subwoofer (a must for games like Mech Warrior)
  • US Robotics 33.6 modem (Again, never seems like enough)
  • A  Canon Multipass 800 Printer, scanner, fax, copier, and coffee maker (just kidding about that last part)
  • And a Colorado Jumbo 250 meg tape backup (to keep it all safe).
Here's my recommendation to those who care:
  1. Have a place to do business.  A seperate room where you go to work is worth more than you can imagine.
  2. If you havent already, install a second phone line.  For those who want to surf, fax, AND do business or let their family have a personal life, its required and well worth the $15 or so a month.
  3. Have a backup system.  A tape backup, LAN storage, or other mechanizm for saving off your precious material may never be needed, but when you need it and don't have it you'll be so sorry you'll wish you were dead, or at least wish those around you were dead :^)
