The Elements of Web Page Style
Masterful Maintenance

A webmaster's work is never done. A good webmaster makes frequent updates to their site (sometimes every couple of days), as they know that no-one wants to find stale information at a web site.

Under Construction?

"Under Construction" signs aren't necessary. Who likes arriving at a site only to find an apology for the way the site looks and works?

If you feel that your site is so unpresentable that it needs an "Under Construction" sign, you should wait to put it on the web. Get at least 80% of your site working before you upload it. Visitors are annoyed with wasting time at a site where nothing works.

However, if you're having technical difficulties with your site, it's alright to let your visitors know that you're having temporary problems and are working to fix them as soon as possible.

Frequent Updates

It's good for your site to be updated frequently. The best (and most subtle) way to let your visitors know that you're always improving your site is to put "last updated on" or something similar at the bottom of your pages.
