Golden Opportunity in the U.S. Senate to
Eliminate School-to-Work, Goals 2000
and National Testing.
REQUESTED ACTION:
We have an incredible opportunity!
We need thousands of calls to make this
happen. Everyone needs to take a moment
to call their U.S. Senators.
In order to stop federal funding of National Testing, Goals 2000, AND School-to-Work, call your U.S. Senator and give him these four messages:
- "Vote for Sen. Coverdell's A+
Education Savings Accounts Bill"
- "Vote for Sen. Ashcroft's Amendment
to stop funding for National Testing"
- "Vote for Sen. Gorton's Amendment
to
block grant approximately $10 billion to
the states; to restore local control of
education and to defund failed programs
like School-to-Work and Goals 2000"
- "Vote against Glenn's Amendment
which
would limit the A+ Accounts to public
school children"
Call Monday, April 20 through Wednesday,
April 22 when these votes are scheduled.
The Capitol Switchboard number is
202-224-3121. Copy this to everyone you
know including church members, support
groups, friends, and family members.
BACKGROUND:
The Senate Republicans have been trying
to launch a major offensive on improving
education with Senator Coverdell's A+
Accounts Bill as the best vehicle.
As a result, largely due to the pressure from home schoolers, the leadership will push to amend Coverdell's A+ Accounts Bill by adding Senator Ashcroft's amendment to permanently ban funding for development and implementation of National Testing (this ban already passed the House).
The leadership will also support Senator Gorton's Amendment to the A+ Accounts bill which will block grant approximately $10 billion of federal education funds directly to the states: either to the local education agencies or the Governors which is to be decided by the state legislatures. This will defund $10 billion dollars worth of federal education programs including Goals 2000 and the School-to-Work Opportunities Act, rendering all of these programs irrelevant.
The A+ Accounts will enable individuals to place funds in an account for children's public, private, or home education and all interest earned on the accounts will be tax free. Senator Glenn's Amendment, which should be opposed, would only allow parent's to use these A+Savings Accounts for public education.
