Early Manicom History
In my research, the earliest record I've been able to find is an IGI listing for
1211 ~ Geoffrey MANEKIN ~ London England
WILLIAM the CONQUEROR set up the 1st countrywide administration in England
following his conquest in 1066.
In order to levy taxes on the feudal estates,
he established a population register of those that had wealth, learning or influence.
This register was periodically updated and we find the following entries:
1242 - Stephen, William MANEKYN - Liber Feodorum KENT |
1273 - Robert MANEKIN - Hundred Rolls - SUFFOLK |
1273 - Simon MONEKIN - Hundred Rolls - OXFORD |
1318 - MANEKYN le Heumer - Calendar of Patent Rolls LONDON |
*A FREEMAN had a number of rights and also responsibilities.
The main right was to trade freely within the city.
Responsibilities included attending mayoral elections,
keeping an eye out for malpractice among the traders, etc.
1399 - John MANSCOMBE, tailor, became a *freeman by payment of £1.3.4 |
1422 - Philip MANSCOMBE, became a *freeman by relationship, as the son of John MANSCOMBE |
1548 - There were a couple of families with the surname MANATON
who appeared in the old Anglo-Saxon village of UGBOROUGH Devon.
Johis MANATON & Marger GIBBE married Nov 11 1548.
They had 10 children:
1) Johis chr Aug 8 1549, married Eeda LISSEN on Nov 16 1606
Johis & Eeda had 3 children:
Susanna (1609), Gracia (1612) and Henricus (1616)
2) Henricus chr Aug 9 1550, married Agneta COTLE on Feb 27 1619
Henricus & Agneta had a son Johis chr Dec 16 1622 in Ugborough.
3) Richus chr Mar 13 1551
4) Margeria chr Sep 30 1554
5) Lucia chr Jan 14 1556
6) Laurencius chr Apr 18 1558
7) Esibella chr Dec 8 1560
8) Willus chr Oct 20 1563
9) Maria chr Mar 19 1565, married Willus BICKFORDE on Nov 9 1590
10) Johanna chr Jan 1 1569, married Johannes HODGE on Dec 31 1590

Most of Ed's earliest proven, connected ancestors
have been traced to CLYST HONITON in Devon
beginning with John MANIKIN / MANITON
John born abt 1614 married Frances born abt 1616
They had 2 children born in Clyst Honiton:
1) Elizabeth chr Apr 2 1634 / died Apr 6 1635
2) * John chr Mar 13 1636 / died abt 1696
* John & his wife had at least 5 children:
1) Cherriti died Aug 2 1705,
married Richard TINCOMBE (Tinkom) on Sep 14 1684
2) Mary died July 16 1702,
had BASE son Francis MANICOM who died Oct 10 1686
3) Richard died 1705,
is listed as Richardum MANAKIN
at his marriage on Jul 14 1686 to widow Honoram GLASSE.
At his death, he is listed as Richard MANISCOMBE
4) *Charles b abt 1664 / died Nov 9 1715 (see below)
5) Francis b abt 1666

*Charles MANSCOMB (died Nov 9 1715) and his wife Florence (died Jan 28 1732).
Charles & Florence had 10 children :
1) Elizabeth chr Feb 13 1686 / died Oct 15 1687
2) Alice chr Aug 20 1688,
married John SYMES on Jan 14 1715 in Broad Clyst Devon (4 children)
3) William MANNOTON chr Sep 8 1691 ('base' child of ..... HILL)
William appears to have been raised by Charles & Florence as their own!

5) John chr Dec 11 1693
6) Elizabeth chr Jul 19 1696 / died Feb 4 1717
7) Francis chr May 7 1699
8) Peter chr Sep 6 1701

* Charles chr 1691 married Judith abt 1716
and in 1723, there was a 'Settlement Discharge'
for Charles MANICOMB & wife from Clyst Honiton.
Charles died before 1726.
(Judith MANNIKIN remarried a George BAKER on July 26 1726 in Clyst Honiton
and had 2 more children, Mary & John, born in Woodbury Devon)
Charles & Judith MANICOM had 2 sons:
1) John born Nov 16 1716 in Clyst Honiton
He died young on Jul 16 1729 in Lympstone
2) *Richard chr May 8 1719 in East Budleigh
Richard's date of death is unknown,
but an Ann MANYCOMBE was buried Oct 12 1795 in Lympstone
Richard & his wife Ann had 3 sons:
1) Charles chr Nov 12 1749 in Lympstone
2) * John born 1750 (chr Dec 15 1756 in Lympstone)
3) Richard chr Oct 15 1752 in Lympstone
Virtually every MANICOM in the world from then on,
is descended from these 3 sons of Richard MANICOM.
Many have stayed in the United Kingdom
while others have emigrated to far away places:
Australia, South Africa, Canada, the USA,
France and Guadeloupe (French West Indies).
