Richard Manicom ~ The Patriarch

As far back as the mid-1600s, there are scattered references to Manicoms in records
from
East Budleigh, Clyst Honiton and Lympstone.
(As we have noted in other pages at this site, the surnames always varied in their spelling)
Richard MANICOM could be referred to as the GRAND PATRIARCH,
since all known MANICOM families descend from his 3 sons !!
He was christened May 8 1719 in East Budleigh Devon,
the son of Charles MANICOM chr Apr 17 1691 & Judith, of Clyst Honiton (see BELOW)
Charles died between 1723 -- 1726.
Judith MANNIKIN (spelling in register) remarried on July 26 1726
at Clyst Honiton to George BAKER
and had 2 more children, thereby giving us her descendancy as well ---
a) Mary chr Sep 24 1727 in Woodbury Devon
b) John chr Apr 29 1733 in Woodbury
Richard was the grandson of Charles MANICOM and Florence of Clyst Honiton Devon.
Charles died Nov 9 1715 and Florence died Jan 28 1732.
He was the grand-nephew of Richard MANICOM
who married widow, Honoram GLASSE in 1686 in Clyst St George.
This grand-uncle, husband of Honoram, died in 1705 in East Budleigh.
Charles MANICOM & Judith had 2 sons:
1) John born Nov 16 1716 in Clyst Honiton
died Jul 16 1729 in Lympstone
* 2) Richard chr May 8 1719 in East Budleigh
East Budleigh Parish
*Richard married abt 1748
(possibly to Ann b abt 1725 who was buried Oct 12th 1795 in Stoke Damerel)
Richard and wife had 3 sons:
1) Charles chr Nov 12 1749,
married Mary CREWS on Oct 4 1774 in Lympstone Devon.
(Mary was chr Nov 15 1751 in Lympstone,
the daughter of Edward CREWS)
Charles & Mary had 3 children:
i) Anne
ii) Jane married James FROST
iii) Charles married 1st to Sarah CHAMBERS on Dec 22 1816 in Topsham Exmouth Devon.
They had only 1 child, John Charles Chambers MANICOM b 1817.
Sarah died in 1818.
He married 2nd to Charlotte WEST on Oct 5 1821 in St Edmund's Exeter Devon.
Charlotte was chr Sep 29 1799 in Lympstone, the daughter of John WEST & Sarah SANDERS.
2) John born 1750 (chr Dec 15 1756),
married 1st to Sarah FISHLEY on Dec 10 1780 in Stoke Damerel.
Sarah was chr Jul 28 1757 in Northam Devon,
the daughter of John FISHLEY & Catherine YEO.
Sarah died Jul 07 1795 in Stoke Damerel.
John & Sarah had 6 children
John married 2nd to Susannah SPETTIGUE on Jun 18 1796 in Stoke Damerel.
Susannah was chr Nov 28 1768 in Warbstow Cornwall,
the daughter of Richard SPETTIGUE & Mary MOYSE.
John & Susannah had 6 children:
Richard married Rebecca LEDDRA in Plymouth St Andrew Devon
Mary married John FARLEY in Stoke Damerel Devon
Charles married abt 1825 to Sarah Ann
James married Betsy BRAY in Tintagel Cornwall
Elizabeth married John MEDLAND in Maker Cornwall
Edward married Mary HOLLAND in East Stonehouse Devon
3) Richard chr Oct 15 1752 / died Jul; 27 1826
Before he married in 1780,
Richard & Mary LOVRING had made their intention to wed known.
For some reason, the marriage never took place
but Richard did father Mary's child,
Ann Lovring MANICOM chr Jun 4 1775 in Lympstone.
Richard then married Dorothy OSMOND on Nov 26 1780 in Stoke Damerel.
Richard & Dorothy had 2 sons:
1) Richard chr Aug 5 1785 in St Mary's Chatham Kent England and died Sep 24 1864.
He married Margaret MANNING on Oct 18 1808 in Stoke Damerel.
Margaret MANNING was born in 1785 and died Oct 29 1864.
Richard & Margaret had 6 children:
i) Mary Ann married Edward RICE on Aug 21 1831
ii) Margaretta married John GRIGG on Oct 16 1834
iii) Sarah
iv) Louisa
v) Richard married Thomasine SYMONS in 1841
2) Edward chr Dec 9 1792 in St Mary's Portsea Hampshire England
I don't know if this Edward survived to adulthood ....
Nothing more is known of Richard MANICOM, the Grand Patriarch, at this point.
It would be interesting to discover his date of death, etc.
