John Manicom ~ The Joiner

ANCESTRY

As far back as the mid-1600s, there are scattered references to Manicoms in records from
East Budleigh, Clyst Honiton and Lympstone.
(As we have noted in other pages at this site, the surnames always varied in their spelling)

John MANICOM was the 2nd son of Richard,
the Grand Patriarch of virtually all the world's MANICOMs,
who had been christened May 8 1719 in East Budleigh Devon.

His mother seems to have been Ann who was buried Oct 12 1795 in Lympstone.
All 3 of Ann's sons named their first daughters after her :-)

John was born abt 1750 but wasn't christened until Dec 15 1756 in Lympstone Devon.

He was married 1st to Sarah FISHLEY on Dec 10 1780 in Devonport.
Sarah was chr Jul 28 1757 in Northam Devon,
the daughter of John FISHLEY and Catherine YEO.

John & Sarah had 5 children:
1) Ann chr Oct 24 1781

2) Richard chr Dec 08 1783 / died before 1788

3) John chr Feb 23 1785
married Nov 11 1804 to Elizabeth WESTON (6 children)
I have been given info on the descendants of only 2 of their children:
~ William Weston who married Mary Ann THOMAS
~ George who married Sarah DORWARD

4) Richard chr Feb 6 1788 / died bef 1799

5) William Fishley b Jun 7 1790 / chr Jun 3 1803
married Oct 8 1810 to Mary ROWE (3 children)
(Mary was chr Oct 4 1791, the daughter of James ROWE & Ann)

Sarah Fishley MANICOM died July 7 1795 in Stoke Damerel.

John was married 2nd
to Susannah SPETTIGUE

Jun 18 1796
in Stoke Damerel.

Susannah was chr Nov 20 1768
in Warbstow Cornwall,

the daughter of
Richard SPETTIGUE
& Mary MOYSE

John & Susannah also had 5 children
:

1) Richard chr Feb 27 1799 / died Mar 3 1844
married Aug 28 1822 to Rebecca LEDDRA (9 children)
(Rebecca was born 1798, the daughter of George LEDDRA & Rebecca)

(Rebecca Leddra MANICOM remarried shortly after 1844 to Daniel LEWIS)

2) Mary chr Sep 22 1801 / May 25 1837
married Sep 10 1829 to John FARLEY (at least 3 children)
I have the descendants of their children
(John B and Edward Manicom FARLEIGH)
~ ALL their family seemed to have emigrated to New South Wales and Australia via Ireland ~

3) Charles chr May 15 1803
married abt 1825 to Susan Ann

I've been given info on his descendants
via his known son Charles William b 1826 in Middlesex England.

Charles was
the famous baker
on
South Molton Street

in London.

He married Zilpah WHIPHAM and had 10 children.
Their 10 children were christened in St Georges Hanover Square in London.
4 of their 10 children died before their 10th birthdays !!

Their youngest, Henry b 1869, emigrated to Australia
and I have been in touch with 1 of his descendants.

*4) James born Feb 3 1806
married Jul 27 1841 to Elizabeth (Betsy) BRAY (7 children)*
(Betsy was born 1814-1819 in Cornwall, the daughter of Richard)

4) Elizabeth born abt 1808 / buried Jul 8 1868
married Oct 17 1831 to John MEDLAND (5 children)
Witnesses were John & Mary FARLEY, bride's sister & husband.
They were 'Sojourners' at the parish in Maker Cornwall where marriage took place.
I have heard that this simply means they were NOT members of that parish.

5) Edward chr Dec 29 1812 / died May 5 1877
married Jan 23 1837 to Mary HOLLAND (3 children)
Mary HOLLAND was descended from Cornelius HOLLAND, the regicide.

Their eldest, Mary Clarke was the only 1 of 3 children to survive to adulthood :-(
She married Thomas Walter GOOD on Jul 9 1866 in Stoke Damerel Devon.
= Herbert Edward GOOD chr Feb 28 1871
= Edward Manicom GOOD chr Feb 29 1872
= Walter Thomas GOOD chr Feb 29 1872
* Archibald Manicom GOOD chr Apr 20 1873
*Archibald was the only one of their children to survive to adulthood
and he married Rose WATERS in 1892.

John's occupation in 1780 at his marriage to Sarah FISHLEY was listed as 'joiner'.
In 1796 at his marriage to Susannah SPETTIGUE,
it was listed as 'house carpenter, dock'.

He retired with a pension of 20 pounds per annum from the Dockyard.

John MANICOM died Mar 25 1844 in Devonport Devon as a result of 'decay of nature'.

In the 1851 Census, his widow, Susannah is shown living with her youngest, Edward,
his wife Mary HOLLAND and their 3 children.
