I've seen on my calender for this year that Fred Lanting is judging in
the UK this year. Does anyone know what type of GSD he prefers??
The best answer is in the National Magazine published in the UK, but
basically, in a nutshell, it is this: the "type" most
closely adhering to
the Standard of the breed, while
taking into
account such "mechanical" errors in its wording such as
angles
that do not exist. In the GSD, character is Numero Uno, and
utility
is next (von Stephanitz etched in granite that the GSD is a
functional,
working dog). To reach that ideal, the structure should be
such
that hints at performance ability: correct proportions for
efficiency
of movement, dryness/firmness for endurance, soundness for a
long
healthy life.
No dog is perfect. Faults in one decade may be
more serious than in
another, and we judges must keep steering the
GSD back to the golden
middle-ground, which means we may have to pay
more attention to ears when
that becomes a widespread problem, to
pasterns when weakness there
increases, to toplines when they have
seriously departed from historical
reason and anatomical logic.
Emphasis should be placed on the positive
aspects, but to overlook
too many or too serious faults is to do a grave
disservice to the
breed. Forgiving minor departures from the ideal in
the light
of outstanding virtues is the most challenging part of this
judging
job, as each dog before the examiner has different sets of both.
In
part, it is a matter of comparing oranges to apples when
"part-judging",
so we have to keep re-focussing on the "whole dog", and
then
give the detailed analysis later.
