LITERATURE

Although there are many fine books about rabbits that are sadly out of print, The Brainy Bunny regretably only features books that are still available for purchase.

Books for Adults

Richard Adams' Watership Down depicts the allegorical tale of a band of wild rabbits and their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their ancestral home. The brave rabbits face numerous harrowing challenges posed by predators and hostile warrens in their quest to create a perfect society in a mysterious promised land known as Watership Down. First published in 1972, this novel has become a world-wide classic and has been compared to other literary works such as Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and J.R.R. Tolkein's The Hobbit.

Emily Margaret Stuparyk's When Only the Love Remains chronicles the author's journey though the grief process following the unexpected loss of her pet rabbit, Poochie. The memoir is a beautifully written tribute to her rabbit's life and an affirmation of the grieving and healing process for anyone who has lost a beloved pet. Visit Emily's website, The Home Page of When Only the Love Remains, for more information on this wonderful book, and for many adorable photos of Poochie and Emily's other animal friends.

Other titles (fiction and non-fiction) for adults include:

Whittaker, Robert. A Manger in My Rabbit: Memoirs of an Oregon Veterinarian.

Alicia Ezpeleta's Rabbits Everywhere is an outstanding resource for rabbit enthusiasts. Ezpeleta's book explores the surprisingly complex mystique surrounding rabbits, beginning with a brief introduction of rabbits in a cultural, artistic, and literary context, followed by a look at the often contradictory symbolism surrounding rabbits. The author presents diverse portraits of rabbits from ancient Egypt and Rome, the Middle Ages, the European Renaissance, and modern pop culture.
