The Newman Family
The last Newman in my direct line of
ancestors was my Grandmother - Edna Olga Newman
who was born in 1916 in Ely, Cambridgeshire. This part of
my family is the current area of interest due to an amazing path
of luck which has led me to distant relatives still living in
Ely. The furthest back that I have researched is to a Charles
Newman (my Gt. Gt. Gt Grandfather) who is living as a
Blacksmith in the High Street of a village called Swaffham
Bulbeck, South of Ely on the 1881 census with his
wife Emma and youngest son, Elias.
Whilst looking through a recent book titled "The Achive Photographs Series - Ely" compiled by Cambridgeshire historians Pamela Blakeman and Michael Petty M.B.E, (ISBN 0-7524-1007-5) I came across a picture of a man standing outside his cottage in Ely with his dog. Underneath the photo was the caption "Alfred Newman and his dog Spot". It came as some suprise to me that this was infact my Great Grandfather, Alfred Newman (1883-1969). This picture had never been seen before by anyone in my immediate family and because it was named I decided that I would try to find the source of the picture. After writing to the authors they gave a name and address of the picture's owner - a distant relative who remembers my Great Grandfather and Grandmother very well. I now have a copy of this picture and several more copies (including a large family photograph from 1925) will hopefully be in my collection in a short while.

Please contact me if you have any Newman relations who have Barrington or Woodditton, Cambridgeshire connections. I am trying to find out some details for a fellow computer-less researcher who has helped me out and therefore I would like to return the favour. One of his relations (Grandfather, I think) worked as a Coachdriver for the Indian Maharaja Duleep Singh at Elveden Hall in Elveden, Suffolk during the late 1800's early 1900's. Please help me help him by emailing me with info!
Norfolk is the area of research for Ms. Sadie Newman who is trying to trace her Newman family. The earliest ancestor that she has so far descovered was an Edward Newman who was married and died in East Bradenham, Norfolk, England. After approxiamately 1840 her research interests shift to Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.
