Tingey

This site also includes the common variant: Tingay

The unusual surname of Tingey appears twice in my family tree. Once as my direct line - the last ancestor of mine to have the surname was my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother - Mary Tingey, born in 1820 in Little Downham, Cambridgeshire. The second appearance as the married surname of my Great Great Aunt - Mary Ann Moden of Ely, Cambridgeshire. I do not know whether these two occurances are in any way linked or not but it is interesting to think that they are connected somehow through the tangles of time and marriages!

Mary Tingey

It was only very recently that a fellow researching relative came across the marriage certificate of my Gt Gt Gt Grandmother Mary Tingey and discovered that my family were the result of both hers and my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather's (James Martin (1814-1868)) second marriages. Mary Tingey had previously been married on 23rd August 1846 at Little Downham Church to a Mr. John Crisp and they had a son called William Crisp - born the same year. By 1850, Mary had been widowed by John Crisp and re-married to my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather (a widower), James Martin. They then went on to have three more children:

Mary Tingey 1. James Martin. (1851-1934), my Gt Gt Grandfather - married Sarah Elizabeth Giddings (1852-1925) - my Gt Gt Grandmother.

2. Ellen Martin (1853-?) - she simply disappears!!!

3. Sarah Jane Martin (1855-1864).

Mary's first child - William Crisp went on to take the Martin surname and eventually marrying and moving to the Rochdale area of Lancashire, where he contracted Measles and died - his widow Selina returned to the Ely area and later re-married.

Mary (pictured right) died between the 1871 and 1881 census. She is noted on the 1871 census as a widowed gatekeeper at the Railway Gatehouse, 2nd Drove, Pymoor near Little Downham. She appears there living with her son, James Martin (my Gt Gt Grandfather).
