U S A: Rescue Dogs Page 1

Florida - The Sunshine State

Left - Dutch, age 3, is a Rescue and was taken out of an abusive home that told me about the situation at the age of 18 months. Presently, he's 29" at the withers and weighs 98 pounds. When I got him, he didn't know his name, any commands, how to walk on a leash or even how to get into a car, and he weighed less than 60 pounds, had two broken ribs and injured vertebrae. Now, we're working on his CD, and he is an affectionate, accepting, cuddly dog, who loves anyone and everyone.

Dutch belongs to Kris (Kritina) Porto, who lives in Zephyrhills in Florida.

Below - Ryan. Ryan is also a rescue Dobe, read about his horrific story below.

Ryan - His story: (In Kris Porto's own words): I encountered a few beasts at the shelter when I picked up Rescue Dobe Ryan--of the human variety. Ryan has been badly abused (to the extent that he was chained in a yard to a tree while the man of the house broke BEER BOTTLES on his body, beaten, kicked, etc., etc., Ry put up with this until the man started to beat the 4 yr old little boy (his son). At 8 months old, Ry stepped in to stop it. The neighbors called the cops & Animal Control who removed Ryan.) There were two male AC officers who protested vociferously that Ryan was being adopted. One of them looked me in the eye and said, "I should stop this adoption right now. Give me that dog and I'll take him out back & shoot him." My reply was: "A man--just like you--made him this way. Step away from my dog NOW." Then the second approached Ryan with a bite stick (held like a weapon) in his hand and a chip the size of Montana on his shoulder and said, "When this crazy sucker kills some man and gets a court date, I'll be the first in line to testify against him." I LOST IT: I told him that all he was doing was perpetuating the problem, and a few other polite, but choice defensive words regarding proper treatment, training and conditioning. As I left, I told them when Ry gets his CGC and CD, I'll send them pictures. <VVVBG>

Since I've had Ryan, he's growled at men twice, and only when they enter my home for the first time, it stops with a "Ryan, No," from me, this dog has never been told that growling is bad. My dad visits daily and stays over on the weekends, comes & goes as he pleases, and Ryan greets him happily. We've visited friends- homes including males, and obedience classes including males. I've had 8-10 male friends (mostly my girlfriend's significant others and riding school dads) visit him, and he is FINE. So much for their demands that this 9 MONTH OLD PUPPY was UNTRAINABLE.

Ryan was scheduled for destruction the morning after I picked him up.

North Carolina - The Tar Heel State

Higgins - Higgins was rescued from being euthanized at the vets by Liz Zeria, the veterinary technician on duty when he was taken in. Liz fell in love with him, and they had seven very happy years together. Higgins died on 1 May 1997, and he is greatly missed.

Left - Ariel is a starvation case rescued from South Georgia. At the time she was rescued, she was tied with a logging chain and had been so starved so much, she couldn't lift her own chain!

Our many thanks go to ANEMRL in South Georgia, and especially to Teddi Nachreiner for adopting us to this wonderful Dobergirl. Ariel now belongs to Destyny.
