About the Dobermann Welfare
Association
The Dobermann Welfare Association has been formed by a group of
totally dedicated volunteers who, between them, have many years
experience in caring for and re-homing unwanted, ill-treated and
stray Dobermanns.
The sole aim of the Association is to rescue and re-home
Dobermanns, who through no fault of their own are unwanted. We
consider that any Dobermann in need is worthy of their attention. It
doesn't matter where they come from, or what age they are, they will
be accepted. This is subject to available funds and kennel space.
As a organisation, we visit all prospective new homes and also
assess each dog that comes into us. We take into serious
consideration the specific needs of each dog, as well as the
requirements of the new owners.
All the people involved with the organisation are willing
volunteers, so any donations are used for the welfare of the dogs.
Area Coordinators for the Dobermann Welfare Association live in
and cover the following areas:
Avon, Somerset, Devon and
Cornwall
Gloucestershire
Hereford and Worcester
Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and
Middlesex
Northamptonshire, Leicestershire
and Warwickshire
Oxfordshire
Scotland
Yorkshire
Many Dobes have now been rescued by the DWA, and successfully
re-homed. These success stories speak for themselves. They are what
the DWA is all about. The work of the Association is ongoing however,
as sadly it seems that there will always be Dobes who find themselves
without a home.
Please help the Dobermann Welfare Association to help the Dogs.
They are our only concern, but we can't carry out our rescue and
re-homing work without your assistance.

How you can
help:
Adopt a
Dobermann
This is what the DWA is all about! If you think you could provide
a loving home for a deserving Dobe, please
e-mail me, or contact an
Area Coordinator, who will gladly
discuss this with you in more detail.
Golden
Oldies
The Golden Oldies Scheme has arisen, because from time to
time Dobes have come in who are very old or have serious health
problems, and this can make them difficult to re-home. To encourage
people to adopt these dogs, the DWA undertakes to pay any and all vet
bills that may arise. You can help the Golden Oldies in one of two
ways:
- Adopting or fostering one of the Oldies.
- Becoming a Patron of the Golden Oldies Scheme, and thereby
providing the DWA with the funds they need to cover these bills.

fostered, and information about some of those waiting for new homes,

Become an Area
Coordinator
Wales is in desperate need of an Area Coordinator as no-one
covers this area at all. Other areas that are in dire need of a
coordinator are: the North West of England, namely the Cumbria
and Greater Manchester districts and Kent. A new
coordinator has just been appointed for Cornwall . However, it
doesn't matter which area you are prepared to cover, your help will
be greatly appreciated.
All that you need is a desire to help the poor unfortunate dogs
that are brought to us. Knowing something about the breed and dogs in
general would be advantageous, as well as good organisational skills,
but would you also be willing to:
- Go out and collect a dog if necessary, and take it to kennels?
- Organise kennelling for dogs coming in, and for veterinary
treatment if it is required? This would mean negotiating with
local boarding kennels to see if they would be prepared to house
dogs for you, at a reduced rate, until you can re-home them.
- Help to place the dog in its new home, which usually entails
screening telephone enquirers, visiting prospective new homes to
ensure that they are suitable, and then meeting new owners at the
kennels to introduce them to the dog?
- Do a follow up visit to make sure the dog is happily settled,
and the owners are not experiencing any problems?
Helping an Area Coordinator
Do you think that you could help out an Area Coordinator?
Could you help them to pick up dogs if they can't go themselves, or
even help to 'vet' a home? If you are interested, please
contact us, and we will put
you in touch with your nearest Area Coordinator.

Becoming a Home
Vetter
Do you think that you could you help an Area Coordinator? Could
you help them pick up dogs if they can't go themselves, or even help
to vet a home? If you are interested, please
contact us, or contact
Kath Miller on 01465 821254. We
will be pleased to hear from you.
Helping the Dobes in
kennels
Those unfortunate Dobes who have not yet been adopted and are
still in kennels also need your support. If you would be interested
in giving them walks, or perhaps transportation to the Vets if
needed, get in touch, and
we will see if there is a Dobe in kennels near you.
Donations & fund
raising
Donations large and small are always needed. These need not be
cash donations, they could also be donations of dog food, blankets
and toys. Other ways to help boost the Association's bank balance
include organising fund raising events, or placing a collecting box
at your local pub, newsagents, pet shop, etc. If you're interested in
helping in any of these ways, please
get in touch.
Becoming a
member
You can become a member of the DWA. For more information on this,
please feel free to
e-mail me, and I will bw
pleased to give the the relevant information. You will then be
actively helping our endeavours. You will also receive our quarterly
newsletter, called "Caring Hands", which provides news on our
activities and articles about some of our rescued dogs. As a member,
you will be able to attend and vote at our AGM.
If you would like to join, please
get in touch, and an
application form will be sent to you.
Place a collecting
box
If you feel that you could help by placing a collecting box,
please contact Barbara Winters on: 01895 421388 or
e-mail me, and I will
arrange for some boxes to be sent to you. You could use them for
anything; at home for your loose change, at the local pet shop, or
even at your local bar where the landlord may have a Dobermann.
Recently a box was collected from a bar where a Dobe lived which
raised £40.00 in three weeks! (It was used as the swear box, no
wonder they raised a lot!)
These are just some of many ideas, but if you have any new ones or
think you can help, please
contact us. We will be
pleased to hear from you.
Helping in other
ways
Can you think of an amusing cartoon involving Dobes that Dobermann
Welfare can make into cards for sale? You don't have to draw it, just
the idea and the caption will be fine.
If you have any original ideas, please
e-mail me and I will pass
them on. Who knows, you may see your suggestion in print!
Thank you in advance for helping us to help the Dobes.
