The purpose of this site is to show how someone that can learn a
very limited amount of knowledge of html can easily learn to
build a home page using webtv, including adding images, thanks to webtv's recent upgrade giving us the ability to Cut, Copy &
Paste. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and that is merely a language to speak to and give commands to computer browsers using
NOTE: WIRED KEYBOARDS have an adaptor available for $36.95 that will enable you to assign favorite sites to your
F-Keys for the Plus and Classic Webtv Models. Classic Models
don't need an adaptor to plug in a wired keyboard but they will
need this adaptor if they want to be able to assign favorites to
the F Keys. Full info and orders can be placed here.
Puter People have the ablility to competely build their page on
their puters then send (FTP) it to their Home Page Files. Myself
having no knowledge of puters you will have to refer to your
owners manual to learn your cut, copy & paste and other related
things. However you will be able to build your page on line just
like the tutorial teaches Webtvers to do if you prefer.
First of all let me take all the aprehensions away from newcomers. It's FREE! It's FUN! It's EASY! If you do make a mistake nothing will be permanately damaged. You can't break your webtv doing it.
Many people make and maintain Personal Home Pages for many
reasons. Some to see how many "Hits" (visits) they can get.
Others to put forth and share information. Some just to have a
little family album to share with family and friends.
There are many places that will "host" your page for free. Some
with 50 MEGS of space (that's a lot). The first names that come
to mind for most are GeoCities, Tripod, Anglefire and Xoom.
However since this page is hosted on Geocities and that's the one I'm most familiar with I'll direct all my comments to GeoCities.
GeoCities has 11 MEGS and all my pages you see is only one fifth
of that. Any of these Homestead Sites you choose have people
there that will help you with any problems you might have.
You may visit any of the sites and they all have full instructions of what to expect and how to sign up.
There are plenty of tutorials on every aspect you'll need to
know. You'll need to learn a little about basic html. You'll need to learn to use Search Engines, for that I suggest you read OGIE'S WEB GUIDE and look for the item on Search Engines.
I will guide you through the process step by step like I wish I
had some one to do for me when I started. I was terrfied!
Bookmark (save in Favorites) this page now and you can keep
coming back for each step along the journey. If you don't know how to Bookmark hit your "Save" key in the upper right hand corner of your keyboard. You will get a little popup screen, move your cursor to the left and choose the folder you want to "Save" it in. Then anytime you want to find this page hit your "Favs" key on the top row of your keyboard and click on the folder you "Saved" it in.
One basic concept you will need to know before starting is, for
every page you look at on your tv screen (or monitor) that has
text and or images on it there is actually another page under it with html commands telling your browser to go "read" where these images live and make them appear on the page you're seeing at the present. These
When you start a home page you have a "File Manager" where all your web site information (text and images) are stored. You can liken this to sitting at a work desk and having a file cabinet, full of folders and information you would like to put on a single page, sitting next to you. You might want to reach in the file cabinet and start with some text information and take out the page that says, "Hello, we're the Three Bears. Papa, Mama and Baby." Next you might want to reach in the file cabinet and pull out a picture of the Furry Family and lay it beneath the text. So now in essence you are "building" (laying out) a page. The
information you are putting there actually "lives" in the file
cabinet and you are just viewing it on the desk top. That's what
your browser is doing, finding where these pictures "live" and
running and getting them and laying them out on the screen for
you to look at via the html commands embedded in the page.
Enough of the concept for now. Take ogeretla the friendly bridge
troll's hand and let's begin our journey.

First you need to go sign up for a GeoCities Home Page. You will
choose a neighborhood then find a vacancy to move into.
They will however ask you if you want to open a GeoMail account.
It is not necessary, do so if you wish, but if you do make sure
you check you want all your mail forwarded to your webtv e-mail
addy (address) so you wont have to hassle with retreiving
your mail from GeoCities as they are very busy at times and you
may not be able to get to it at times. You will be able to ammend any info later if you wish.
USER NAME & PASSWORD: When you sign up for a GeoCities Homestead
they will ask you to choose a "User Name" and "password". A User
name is just a name that is unique from all their other users and you may make that anything you wish. It should be between four
and fifteen characters, use all lower case letters, and should
not start with a number. Same with the password. Make it
something you're not apt to ever forget. Example: dmwws (don't
make war with skunks), or perhaps the first part of your e-mail
address, or your name if you have an unusual name. You will be
signing up for many things in the future so may I suggest you use the same User Name and Password for all of them so you won't
forget what one of them is.
You might also want to get a spiral notebook, to write down your
page address and take notes as you go. Once you sign up for a
home page or any thing else you will be sent confirmation and
instructions through e-mail. It is wise to save these on your
"Saved Mail" list for future reference.
Read and reread this and any other pages and take your time and
enjoy the process. This is designed to be a fun learning
experience not to make pressurized emotional wrecks out of us.:)
If you try something a few times and still can't figure it out my e-mail link is at the bottom of every page, and there are some
fine Webtv newsgroups you can post your questions to and get an
answer sometimes within fifteen minutes. I will list those on the bottom of page four under the HTML Test Bed. The Test Bed's a
screen you can practice the codes on the page.
There is a man, (HTML, Web Demi God) named Paul Erickson, who
makes the best Web Guides and tutorials available for Webtv, and
computers, that has a tutorial on how to sign up for GeoCities. I will direct you to Paul Ericksons information on this as it would not behoove me to reinvent the wheel and deprive you of a great tutorial like Pauls. After you have looked through Simple HTML and decide you want a Home Page of your own you can come back here and link to Pauls great tutorial. Click here to go to Paul
Ericksons tutorial.
Now I believe we are ready to go to the next page and start
learning more about "Web Tools."
