As I lazily draw circles with my finger in the water
and see a familiar reflection
looking back,
I watch as each widening circle overlaps and becomes a part of
and takes on the identity of those who came before.
Each enveloping and overtaking the prior,
no longer can I tell where one starts or the other ends.
So we all are, ever-moving, ever-changing, taking on the traits of our ancestors
and leaving a part of ourselves
in our children and grandchildren.
As each circle ceases to be,
much of its personality, its identity,
is left behind
in the continuing circles,
never really passing away at all.
As I Iook back at my reflection, I see not only mine,
but those who came before
and those who have and will come after.
The widening circles cut across the already similar images,
mixing and blurring their features,
leaving only a memory of their existence.
We are all part of God's plan
and have a purpose far beyond what we can see.
As we are spinning forward through life's problems,
we may not see how much we are needed
to help complete succeeding circles.
We may not see that we bring encouragement to others
who may need us to gently pull them along
as they are forming their circles and the next.
We may not see that we are needed to be a part of the whole.
Together, we offer life not only to each other, but as part of the stream, to the
river beyond,
to the oceans, and to the whole world.
As water brings life to the world,
through our willingness to be a part of God's
plan,so do we.
