Notes

From Southwest Times Record- Fort Smith, ARK. Thursday, Dec. 30, 1971 Scranton,s Oldest Man Feted By Vela Kinney SWTR Special Correspondence PARIS- Charles Sumner Kenton of Scranton, the oldest resident of the Scranton area, celebrated his 96th birthday, at open house Sunday. Hosting were his son, Marshall Kenton and Mrs. Kenton. Born in Pollock, Mo. Dec. 29, 1875, the honoree and his family moved to Scranton 42 years ago. He retired as a painter and paper hanger in 1945, and since that time has been taking life easy. If the wheels of time could turn back fo this aged man, many memories both sad and happy could be recalled. He gave the writer a vivid description of his life, beginning with his childhood and the 22 years spent in Pollock where he married Bertha Maud Hall who died at Scranton in 1959. It was in Pollock where Kenton dressed hundreds of turkeys at 5 cents each. He also worked as a store clerk for 11 years at a salary of $100 per year. Leaving Pollock, he went to Carlton, Missouri, where he worked as a section boss for the Burlington Railroad Co. The road master sent Kenton to Exline, Iowa, where he was supposed to be a section foreman, but instead, he started digging coal. He went back to Pollock for a short residence, then to Birchtree, Missouri, where he farmed for a few years, then he and his family moved to Midco where he worked in a $6-million pig-iron plant, until the owner went broke. He then decided to come to Arkansas. Accompanied by his son-in-law, Bill McClure, they arrived in Scranton, liked it so well that they went back to Missouri. In a few days, Kenton and his family came back to Scranton to make their home. This was 42 years ago. Kenton said, "Back in 1920 when I came to Scranton I worked for 25 cents per hour painting houses and hanging paper. I bet I have walked a thousand miles in the Scranton area carrying big wall paper sample books fromm house-to-house finding a job. Work began to pick up, and I later got $1 per hour, then $1.25 per hour later. I've had a good business and worked hard." When painting a church house, Kenton always gave back to the church money received for 2 days of painting, and if he papered four rooms for a church or parsonage, he always papered one room free. Mr. and Mrs Kenton are the parents of 13 children, six living. They are Marshall of Scranton and Buford of Merced, Calif., Mrs. Gail Davis of Gilmer, Iowa, Mrs. Harley Hatcher, Mrs. Jewell Caverns and Mrs. Charles Cowan all of Merced, Ca. There are 25 grandchildren, and 52 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
