Early Kinnicks in America
Return to Bill's Pioneer
Sketches
This page includes sketches I have compiled from my family history
research for my own use. I am posting them on the Internet in the
interest of sharing this information with interested parties. If you
appear to be directly related, based on the information in the the
sketches, or have comments to share with me about these sketches, I
would be happy to hear from you. I do not do research for others, nor
am I particularly interested in speculative relationships or
unrelated surname discussions. There are many other worthy sites for
these activities. I hope you enjoy reading some of these interesting
stories.

Comments
Presented here are a series of vignettes based on the best
information available to date. New information becomes available
regularly which will change the analysis and the outcome, of course.
If you have reason to believe you have such additional information
that would prove useful in achieving a closer resemblance to the
truth, we would love to hear from you. Bill

The above two links are the most useful to most people; those
below are discussions of earlier Kinnick family relationshhips, still
largely based on speculation based on available facts.
Background Remarks
Introduction
The following narrative briefly recounts the background and current
status of the earliest days of the Kinnicks in America as we know it
today (14 Mar 1998). Each month seems to bring new revelations and
questions, but few clarifications or answers. We are now up to
possibly four Williams and three Johns living at the time of the War
of the Revolution plus more earlier and later that may be the same or
different. We must exercise both patience and diligence in our
continued search for true relationships among family members and
others as we move forward on the voyage of discovery.
Background
As reported in Progress Report No. 1,
Nettie Edna Kinnick Waggener, in 1953, published "The Kinnick Family:
A Genealogical History of the Kinnick Family of America," [4]
commonly called "The Kinnick Genealogy." It purported to represent
the Kinnick family in the United States from the first known, at that
time, Kinnick to be recorded in America. She reported that "first
known Kinnick" to be William Kennick who was listed in Bryantown
Hundreds, Charles County, MD, in the census of 1775-1778 of Maryland.
Revolutionary War era records were also reported including William
Kennick, as a Sgt. Major, a William Kennick, Jr., and John Kennick
during the 1775-1780 period. Her researcher in Maryland found several
other Kinnick or Kennick names in records there during the 1775-1851
period.
Based on an estate administration of a
William Kinnick in 1786/87, she listed the children of William, and
his wife, Sarah, as Elizabeth, Ann, Milly, Richard and John. She also
concluded, based on her analysis of her research, that this John was
the John that married Ann and moved to North Carolina in 1795, her
ancesters. It now appears that this relationship was incorrect. Her
John's father was Jasper, not William, it appears, based on a more
detailed examination of the same real estate records that she had
available.
While much of her writing was accurate, based on information
available to her at the time, the number of omissions and errors does
continues to grow as time passes. It appears that, often, she probed
until she found the answer she wanted, then stopped and went on to
something else. We are each prone to this problem, from time to time.
A good reminder.
We are now in the mid-to-late 1990s. Many scholarly studies have been
published in the past 40-45 years regarding, among other things, for
instance, arrivals in the United States from the European continent.
For example, I did a brief review, in July 1995, of a dozen of these
lists. In about two hours, I found three other Kinnicks who had
arrived before the "first one" reported in "The Kinnick Genealogy."

Note: There is no indication, to date, that any of these are part of
the family; only future research will tell.
What will be the next finding? Maybe you will make it. Please let us
know. Every little tidbit of information on Kennick or Kinnick,
especially in Maryland in the 1700s, will be important. Let
us know what you find!
Likely Relatives
I suggest that the following is likely:
A William Kennick and a Jasper Kennick are listed, each as a private,
in the Muster Book on board "His Majesty's Ship Windsor" as being
discharged, apparently, in 31 May 1741, in Jersey. There is an
indication these were Maryland troops, recruited to fight in the War
of Jenkin's Ear, between Great Britain and Spain. We continue to seek
additional information about these men.
In Volume 3, Early Families of Southern Maryland, there is a listing
of a William Kennett/Kennick, b. ca 1718, son of Elizabeth Brightwell
and Jasper Kennett. In Jun 1733, at the death of his parents, at age
15, William Kennick "chooses" John Brightwell, a brother of
Elizabeth, as his guardian to age 21. [1] (This was found in
a Brightwell family history section of the volume. There is no
further Kinnick reference.)
My speculation is that at age 21, in 1739, this William may have
joined the army and was the William discharged in 1741, above. It
could be a different William, entirely, of course. Carrying out this
theory, however, this William would have had military experience when
called up in the War of the Revolution as a Sergent, then Sergent
Major in 1777. He would have been 59 in the year 1777. Is that too
old? Further, however, if this is the same William, he did die in
1785, per the inventory in the estate Administration records. If this
were all the same person, he would have been 66 years old. Not an
unusual age to die at the time.

Your comments and insights are
sought.

Possible Scenario
One
Following is one possible scenario (the one I like - Bill):
A. Elizabeth BRIGHTWELL [1] (b. ca 1693, age 18 in 1711, age
25 in 1718, age 40 in 1733) m. Jasper KENNETT by 1718, est. 1710; d.
1733 leaving underage son, "William KENNETT/KENNICK, b. ca 1718
[1]." {Jasper was dealer of tobacco to the Indians.
"Kinnikinnick" was a tobaccolike preparation made from dried leaves
or bark of various plants and used for smoking, especially by
American Indians [9]. It is possible Jasper became known as
the "Kinnick" man, and, subsequently changed his name, and that of
his son to "Kinnick."}
Children of Elizabeth and Jasper, probably others:
B. i [*] Jasper KENNICK, b. ca 1711, age 22 in 1733; to War
of Jenkin's Ear in 1741/42, age 30/31, was surety on a bond in St.
Mary's Co., MD, 1767 [2]. (may be son of Jasper by prior
marriage)
B. ii [*] Joseph KENNICK, b. ca 1712, witness of land record
in 1752, age 40 [3]; next of kin in 1785 [4], age 73.
(may be son of Jasper by prior marriage)
B. iii William KENNETT/KINNICK, [**] b ca 1718, d. 1785, age
67. (Believed to be the William Kinnick of
the Administraion papers.)
Again, this is speculation based on what is known to date. New
information will change this viewpoint, or confirm it.
Your comments and insights are
sought.

Possible Scenario
Two
An Alternative View, Possible Scenerio Two:
Another researcher [2] has suggested that John, William,
Joseph and Jasper (the father of John who married Ann) were brothers,
possibly sons of either the Jasper or William in the War of Jenkin's
ear:
B. Jasper KENNICK [1]
Children of Jasper and ?? KENNICK, possibly others:
C. i John KINNICK (b. 1754-57; d. Aug 1833, NC) m. Ann ??.
C. ii William KINNICK, m. Sarah
C. iii Joseph KINNICK
C. iv Jasper KINNICK
C. i John KINNICK (b. 1754-57; d. Aug 1833, NC) m. Ann ??. Purchased
land in MD, 31 Jan 1775, "this deed clearly states John Kinnick is
the s/o Jasper Kinnick [2];" took Oath in 1775; sold land in
MD in 1795; purchased land in NC in 1795.
We do not have any way to confirm or deny either theory at this
point. Therefore, I have not included either of these options in the
sketches that follow. It is assumed that Jasper is the father of the
John who married Ann, and, assumes that William and Sarah were the
parents of the John who married Mary, my ancestors. This does fit
with census data from 1790 forward. We continue to seek factual
information on these relationships along with the other unconnected
references available and to be found subsequently.

We do have some preliminary information on Kinnick families who have
come from the European continent since 1850. None of that is yet
confirmed, independently. We look forward to that additional
information.

[**] An alternative hypothesis would insert children of
William, probably Jasper and William, b. ca 1933/5, as the father of
John, William, and Joseph. This would, for instance, allow for the
estimated age of William, given in [4] below, of 1935. Walter
KERRICK, b. 1752, could be fit here as William KENNICK, also, if
found desirable.
