The first song absolutley captured me, and I have loved listening to it ever since. Jacob and I enjoy singing the title track together, and he requests this CD often. Duran Duran (wedding cover)
Duran Duran
by Duran Duran

A fellow Duran fan lent me his tape of this. There is a song on here called "Breath After Breath" that I just love! I ordered this recently from the BMG music club, and I love it!

Pop Trash
Duran Duran

Duran Duran hit MTV when I hit puberty; I had no choice but to become a huge fan! And now there's a new album, available on June 13th. It's on my Amazon.com wish list, so why don't you buy it for me? :) AND, I'm going to see them perform live at Kings Dominion! Roller Coasters and my favorite band, who could ask for anything more?

Musical Selection of the Month for Summer 1999

There are some songs that when you hear them, your whole body seems to go , "Ahhhhhhhhhh!" this CD contains a lot of those songs! I particularly enjoy "Rhiannon" and "Gypsy", and "Don't Stop", and . . . .

Billy joel Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2
by Billy Joel
This is THE perfect CD for a car trip! You know and love all of the songs, and as an added bonus, Billy Joel sings in a key you can sing along with (presuming, of course, that you can carry a tune!) It covers his hits from "Piano Man" to "Only the Good Die Young", "My Life" to "The Longest Time". This is a must-have CD for your collection.

Really Rosie
Carole King
Musical Selection of the Month for September 1999

This is the soundtrack to the TV Shoe of the same name (shown in 1975). She puts many of Maurice Sendak's wonderful children's books to melodies and sings them in her sweet voice. Books/songs like: Alligators All Around, Chicken Soup with Rice, One Was Johnny, and my favorite, Pierre. I also remember seeing one "music video" on The Great Space Coaster while I was growing up. A great kids CD!

Am I Not Your Girl?
Sinead O'Connor

You remember the hit, "Nothing Compares to You". You remember how beautiful her voice sounded (this was before you saw the video or her Saturday Night Live performance). Now, imagine that voice singing torch songs. That's right; Torch Songs! This CD starts out with "Why Don't You Do Right?", which you'll remember Jessica Rabbit singing in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". Sinead also sings other classics such as "Black Coffee", "I Want to be Loved By You" and "Love Letters". I fyou don't believe me when I tell you how wonderful this CD is, go ahead to the Amazon.com site and take a listen in Real Audio. It's fantastic!

Synchronicity
The Police
Musical Selection of the Month for February 1999

It's a rare album that can be listened to as a coherent whole, where every song is a strong as the one preceding it. The Beatles did it, and so does The Police, with Synchronicity. This is one of the CDs I pop in when I need a boost. Listen to the first song, Synchronicity I, with RealAudio on the link, and see what I mean!

The Soul Cages
Sting

This is my all-time favorite album! You have to listen to it all at once. It's too beautiful to miss any. It was written as a tribute to Sting's belated father.

My World
by Trout Fishing in America
The problem with most kids music is that after the second time you hear "Bananaphone" you're ready to slit your wrists. Not so with Trout Fishing in America! This is one band you can listen to over and over and over and still enjoy singing along with the music. Children ages 4 to 100 enjoy the music; your teens will probably say that they don't, but you'll walk in on them playing it and dancing with their little brother! Folksy, blusey and country-like, the music is infectious and the lyrics don't talk down children. The most infectious songs are the title, "My World", plus "Baby's Got the Car Keys" (which are in her diaper), "My Hair Had a Party Last Night", which explains why it looks like that when you wake up in the morning. Trout Fishing CDs are by far my favorite gift to give children, and parents can listen to it on long car trips without going insane!

October
U2

Were you aware that U2 used to be a Christian band? They were, and this album proves it! My favorite track is the first one, "Gloria". It also proves that U2 was never just a pop fluke. These lads are truly talented, and it's a shame they've moved away from their Christian background. (Not left, but moved away. There's a difference.) The last time I checked the Amazon.com website, this CD was only $7.99! How can you not get it???

A Child's Celebration of Rock and Roll
various artists
Musical Selection of the Month for April 1999

Remember the first time you found out that some really cool soungs by your favorite "hip" group were covers of a song that your parents liked when they were your age? Here are some of the best, by the original artists! The first song, "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets gets you and dancing, and it's pretty darn difficult to stop until the CD is over! Other songs include: "Rockin' Robin", "The Name Game", "Purple People Eater", "Monster Mash", "Lollipop", and "La Bamba", to name only half! Follow the link (opens in a new browser window) to view the rest of the tracks, and listen to a few in RealAudio!

Since when is Sports Illustrated associated with music? Have you ever been to a professional game? All of the favorite songs you hear during the game are represented on this CD! From "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys, to "Rock and Roll" by Gary Glitter, this has some great songs! This would be an excellent CD to play during you Little League/Soccor team end of season party!

by Veggie Tales
Families around the world may celebrate now that the New Veggie tales CD is out! Now, Jacob and I will be able to sing all of the words to "His Cheeseburger" as we go through the drive-thru at McDonald's. And, we have back-up music as we sing, "bungee, bungee. Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego?
featuring Rockapella
Musical Selection of the Month for March 1999

Not just for kids, this album has music to appeal to everyone! My personal favorites are "Amazing World" by Tito Puente and ska song "Beautiful Place" by Urban Blight. My son loves gaelic jig "The Violin" by Brian Dewan and Eileen Evers. And no-one can resist the title track! On a 6-hour car trip, we listened to this CD over and over without tiring of it. All of these songs are available to listen to in RealAudio.

Les Miserables
Les Miserables:
the Complete Symphonic Recording

Musical Selection of the Month for October 1998

Jacob and I have listened to this so often, we have all of the songs completely memorized! This recording includes ALL of the music, so you hear why Fantine died, and how Marius and Cosette first laid eyes on each other. And we learn more about Eponine, my favorite character. I've never seen the show, but I hope to someday!

The Prince of Egypt: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
score by Hans Zimmer
Musical Selection of the Month for January 1999

What a fantastic soundtrack! If this album doesn't win an Oscar, I'll be surprised! In the theatre, the music combined with the imagery will literally give you chills, and the music is strong enough to have the same effect when you listen at home. My favorite song is Through Heaven's Eyes, sung by Brian Stokes Mitchell. It's the song that Jesse sing s to Moses when he enters their camp.

Okay, you can stop sniggering now. This happened to be on a listening station at a record store, and I listened to it on a dare, and ended up buying it! Really! It's that good! I did not realize that John Tesh was actually talented! I only wish that Amazon.com had some of the tracks available in RealAudio for you to sample yourself. I think I'll listen to it now....

The American President
The American President
starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning
Video of the Month for April 1999

I didn't expect to like this movie as much as I do. I'm not a particular fan of Michael Douglas in general, but I LOVE Annette Benning! She has entranced me as an actress ever since I saw her in Valmont. This movie is a gem! There are parts in this movie which are so funny, that I still sometimes laugh out loud at the thought of them -- rather embarrassing when I'm walking down the street by myself! This is a typical "chick flick", and I personally rate it higher than Steel Magnolias! What else can you expect from a Rob Reiner film?

Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables
starring Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst
Video of the Month for February 2000

If you're like me, you're a little apprehensive about seeing a movie based on one of your favorite books of all time; Hollywood always seems to mutilate all of the enchantment right out of it! But not this time (perhaps because it was not made in Hollywood, but in Canada?) There has never been, and probably never will be, a better portrayal of Anne Shirley than the one by Megan Follows. All of the actors portray all of the characters so wonderfully, that you truly forget you are watching a movie. Absolutely delighful!

The Day the Earth Stood Still
In Association with Amazon.com
The Day the Earth Stood Still
starring Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal

Too good to correctly be called a Grade-B sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still is still relevant in today's world. I vividly remember watching it as a small child; even then it made an impact on me. And if I ever get three cats, their names will be Klaata, Barada and Nickto! Man! I love this film!

bar

Emma
Emma
starring Gwyneth Paltrow

This movie was one of my first introductions to the wit of Jane Austin. I absolutely loved it! The story, the acting, the way it was shot ... everything! I had seen the movie A&E version of the same film, I think she does a slightly better portrayal than Kate Beckinsale. However, both versions are excellent and one does not detract from the other. The definite deciding line (for me) is Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly, who is VERY easy on the eyes! You can also order Emma in DVD, which also has the advantage of being in widescreen.

Ever After
Ever After - a Cinderella Story
starring Drew Barrymore, Dougray Scott and Angelica Huston
Video of the Month for March 1999

When I went to see this is the movie theatre, it was rated PG-13 for a singular instance of "rough" language. For the video release, they took out the language and rated it PG! This movie is splendid; the scenery, costumes, story, dialogue, etc. I really appreciated that religion was recognized as a part of everyday life! This is something you can watch with your children or by yourself over and over again!

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
starring Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney

Perhaps I chose this movie a month prematurely to feature, but I just couldn't wait any longer! A classic black and white film, this movie shows the widowed Mrs. Muir choosing to move into a haunted house. When she convinces the ghost that she refuses to leave, he begrudgingly admires her spunk and starts a an incredible friendship! A wonderful romantic movie.

The Green Mile
The Green Mile
starring Tom Hanks and Michael Duncan

Loosely based on the book by Stephen King (which I haven't read), I expected a somewhat scary/creepy tale, not a three-Kleenex box tear-jerker! Everyone, and I mean everyone in the theatre was sniffling through this one; although I let out a sob that rivaled the one I honked out during Titanic. But at least I wasn't alone! I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!! The title refers to the nickname given to Cold Mountain Penitentiary's Death Row, because of it's green floor. It's officially rated R for violence, and there is some, but it's one of the Electric Chair scenes that made me squeamish. But I still think a PG-13 rating is a little better suited. (BTW, it's a really intense electric chair scene!) One could say that this is a character study, but rarely is such a good study combined with an excellent story to boot. I never even noticed that three hours had passed. The people I've spoken with agree, you still wanted it to go on even longer, and Mr. Jingles is a big part of that! BUY THIS MOVIE! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

The Iron Giant
>In Association with Amazon.com
The Iron Giant
starring the voices of Eli Marienthal, Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick, Jr., and Vin Diesel

I remember learning about how cartoons were originally drawn for adults, but it became so popular for kids, that the genre took off and became an almost exclusive kids market. I figure that the reason this film is animated is so that kids will pester their parents to let them see it, and so making it a family favorite (as in our family watches it about once a week!)

I also remember studying Shakesphere in high school english class, specifically learning about the difference between static and dynamic characters. This movie is surprising in that the robot (and in a lesser degree, the beatnik [voiced by Harry Connick, Jr.]) is the only dynamic character! Hogarth is your typical child who figures he is "the luckiest kid in the world!" when he finds the slightly damaged robot. He accepts the robot as his "pet", and his friendship is given freely, as any child would. His mom, the "Top Secret" government agent, and the Army general are all typical. But the robot truly shines!

Jacob and I absolutely BAWLED during this film; the emotions ring so true. And the moral of the story is impeccable.
Also available in DVD.

It's a Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life

Video of the Month for December 1998

It's a cliche, but this really is my favorite movie of all time! Need I say more?

Mask of Zorro
The Mask of Zorro
starring Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins
Video of the Month for January 1999

My son and I went to see this in a second run theatre near us, and LOVED it! It has all of the ingredients of a classic tale, action, adventure, love, suffering, triumph over opression, and oh! the dance scene! My dad even enjoyed it a little bit, even though Tyrone Power wasn't in it, and that's saying a lot!

divider

Sense and Sensibility
Sense and Sensibility
starring Emma Thompason and Kate Winslet
Video of the Month for February 1999

This is my second favorite movie in the whole world! This image is linked to the widescreen edition, which I prefer, but I'm glad that Jacob gave me ANY version for my birthday. Emma Thompson turns in a superb performance, as does Kate Winslet, but my personal favorite is Alan Rickman. He proves that in acting, less is more. A definate change of pace from his character in Die Hard! If you have not seen this movie, please do. You will not regret it!

Sound of Music

Sound of Music
starring Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer

Every time this comes on tv, I'm glued to the set. True, it may be because of the dashing Mr. Plummer, but the music is great as well. And who doesn't get choked up when the children are singing to the Baroness and the Captain walks in and starts to join in? Oh! What a classic moment in film history!
