The following information has been compiled in response to some of the West McLaren Mercedes team's most frequently asked questions. The West McLaren Mercedes team... o Sends between 60 and 100 personnel to each Grand Prix with an approximate breakdown as follows: McLaren 60-65 (European races); 55-60 (Overseas races) Mercedes-Benz 20-25 (European races); 15-20 (Overseas races) West 2-5 Mobil 2-5 o Has a race team which comprises: technical director, race team manager, senior race engineer, chief mechanic, software engineer, race strategist, two driver engineers, two assistant engineers, two system engineers, two data analysts, 12 mechanics, fabricator/carbon repairman, engine dress, chief truckie, two tyre men, senior fuel technician, fuel technician, spares co-ordinator, team co-ordinator o Has a test team which comprises: test team manager, test team engineer, two driver engineers (same two as from the race team), two assistant engineers (same two as from the race team), chief mechanic, No. 1 mechanic, two No. 2 mechanics, gearbox technician, data analyst, engine dress, two tyre men, spares co-ordinator/chief truckie, three full-time truckies, fabricator/laminator/truckie, part-time truckie o Transports approximately 25 tons of freight (including three complete race cars at approximately 600 kgs each) to Grands Prix o Booked in excess of 1000 flights in 2000 for racing, testing, and business purposes o Takes between 10-12 engines and four spare gearboxes to each race, three built with rear suspension and one loose unit o Uses about 1,450 hotel rooms per racing season for both personnel and Partners o Uses about 780 hotel rooms per test season o Takes three race cars to each race - Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard's race cars and the spare or 'T' car. Each car has its own group of mechanics who work exclusively on their car. The only time they come together on the same car is for pit stops when 22 people are working on the car. o Completed approximately 37,000 kilometres when testing during the 2000 season o Completed approximately 22,500 kilometres when racing in 2000, including Practice, Qualifying, and Races o Generated 36.8 gigabytes of data during all race meetings and 63.9 gigabytes of data at all tests in the 2000 season. This equates to about 30 full CDs' worth of data o Consumed 60,000 litres of Mobil Unleaded fuel for track work during the 2000 season o Competes with a Formula One car that typically handles 2,500 gearchanges during a race. This figure naturally varies from circuit to circuit. Montreal would involve more gear changes, but another circuit such as Hockenheim would involve less o Competes with a Formula One car that is typically capable of the following performance: 0-60mph 2.3 seconds 0-100mph 3.6 seconds 0-100-0mph 6.6 seconds o A pit stop takes approximately seven seconds, to refuel and to change four wheels and tyres, and the cars can be refuelled at a rate of 12 litres per second o Before moving into the pit garages at each race, the West McLaren Mercedes Team will paint the floor of their garage o Mika, David and Alex experience severe g-forces under acceleration/braking (longitudinal g-force), and through cornering (lateral g-force). Under braking and accelerating out of a corner, the drivers can experience loads that can peak at nearly 5g. This effectively means that the driver's neck has to support nearly five times the combined weight of his head and helmet when braking and cornering during racing - that's up to 25kg. This is the equivalent of having 25 bags of sugar being applied to your head instantaneously o Mika and David lose approximately two kilos in weight and two litres of body fluid during the course of a Grand Prix o Mika, David and Alex are all in top physical shape and have their own physical trainers. An important part of their training programme is neck muscle development o Formula One is broadcast to over 200 countries worldwide and is the most watched seasonal global sporting event o Approximately 366,000,000 people worldwide will watch each of the 17 Grands Prix this season |
