There are a ton of pages about Disney's animated mermaid Ariel, but I'm only going to list a few. Personally, their movie kind of bothers me, because they totally changed the sad ending to the original story of the Little Mermaid as told by Hans Christian Anderson. Other than that, I like the movie for its fantasy, romance, and charm.

If you want to hear the Little Mermaid's story the way it's supposed to be, visit some of my links that lead to story pages, or better yet see the original animated version.
GOOD NEWS! Many of you have written and asked if I know where to find the original version, and the answer is now YES! It is still being produced by a company called UAV Entertainment. I purchased a copy from Amazon.com for less than ten bucks (look for "Little Mermaid-Hans Christian"). The packaging is misleading (click here to see an example of the coverart), but the video is the old animation that starts and ends with the documentary footage of Denmark. The mermaid, named Marina, is pictured to the right. It sends an entirely different (yet still misogynistic) message than the Disney version. |
