BIRTH
Neonatal period begins. Puppies, born with their eyes and ears sealed shut, are completely dependent on their mothers. Body temp is about 97 degrees, and the body consisits of about 84% water.
The heart rate often has more than 200bpm. When puppies are picked up, they curve into a comma shape, reflecting an immature nervous system. Reflex urination and defecation are present; they can't use the bathroom unless the mother stimulates their urethra and anus with her licking. At the same time, the mother keeps her whelping area clean.
DAY 5
The nervous system is developing quickly. Puppies picked up today will arch their backs and stretch their limbs rather than curving into a comma.

DAY 7
Precocious pups begin to crawl.
DAY 10
The nervous system is mature enough to accept sights and sounds from outside-the eyes and ears begin to open.
DAY 14 (2 WEEKS OLD)
Neonatal period ends and transitional period begins. All pups should have open eyes and ears by now. Some will have their first incisor teeth erupting. All puppies should be crawling.
DAY 18
Puppies begin to walk, unsteadily at first.
DAY 21
Transitional period ends and socialization period begins. Siblings emjoy more social interaction. Puppies begin active exploration of the nest. Some may even crawl out of the nest to explore the world. Pups can walk strongly, with an adultlike gait.
WEEK 4
Puppies can carry toys, fight and tug at visitors' shoelaces. They can eat soft foods to supplement mother's milk. They are fearless explorers. The average body temp has reached a steady 100 degrees, and the average heart rate is about 173bpm. Most puppies have their incisor teeth; some may have a full set of puppy teeth.
Puppies have learned proper adult greetings-sniffing noses and tails. They begin adult-type play behavior, including dominance rolls and mounting of litter mates.
WEEK 12
Socialization period ends and juvenile period begins. Puppies are learning cause and effect but are becoming more fearful of unpleasant consequences of their acts; such as being scratched by a cat when they try to greet it. Trauma at this time can cause them to lose socialization skills. Body temp maintains an adult temp of 101.5 degrees. All puppy teeth should be in by now.
WEEK 16
Puppies often begin losing puppy teeth and replacing them with adult teeth, starting with the incisors.
6 MONTHS
Pediatric period ends. Most internal body systems are nearly adult. Except for a still-growing skeleton and higher caloric needs, the puppy is very much a small adult. The body is now only about 63% water, and its heart rate may be as low as 70bpm. By the end of month 6, the puppy should have a full set of adult teeth.
ADULT
Most dogs reach maturity at age 2, depending on the breed. PitBulls reach adulthood at age 2, while Rotts reach it at age 3. During this transitional period, you will be able to tell the temperament of your dog, and what their behavior will be like.
