Hippocampus abdominalis

Commonly referred to as the Big Belly seahorse, H. abdominalus is found in the coastal waters of New Zealand and the temperate waters of Australia. H. abdominalus is typically found in harbours and protected bays holding onto algae or in sponge gardens. The Big Belly seahorse normally stays in deeper water. It has been found in water as deep as 25 meters (about 70 feet).

The Big Belly seahorse has a very low coronet compared to Hippocampus whitei. It is typically yellow but when engaging in mating rituals a red color has been observed.
