What do you name you children?
There are entire books listing thousands of names and their meanings, all aimed at an expectant parent. And for those who want an exotic sounding name (thus forcing the child to pay for a legal name change 20 years later) you can find lists of names from Tahiti, Ireland, Comanche, etc that you can call your child.
But our children are also literary. Burroughs had to either listen to John Carter tell him his name or figure out what to call his hero. Consider also that the original name for Burroughs’ jungle hero was “Zantar”. Good thing he had other options.
So here are a series of documents listing names for characters in Pal-ul-Don and Barsoom.
The Pal-ul-Don names were generated by two separate people, Phyllis and Saroda Mara. Saroda used Langmaker software but Phyllis wrote her own program.
Also, I was the one who added the English translations to many of the name lists.

BARSOOM NAMES

Here is a list of names for Barsoomian characters that was created by **** at his website. I hope that he will expand this list. Also, the ones preceded by an * are taken by me for my own stories so please try to avoid using these.
I am unable to find the name or website of the guy who creates this list so if you know it, please tell me so I can update.

PAL-UL-DON NAMES

Here is a list of male Waz-Don names created by Soroda Mara.

Here is a list of male Ho-Don names created by Soroda Mara. You will notice that some of these names have 4 words instead of the traditional two. This is because the Saroda said that Burroughs decreed that HO-Don names have an even number of words and that means 2 or 4. These can be found at Tarzan’s Treehouse Yahoo Group.

Here is a list of male Waz-Don names created by Phyllis under my request. When I discussed with her my name project, I gave her the basic formula and word lists and she wrote a simple program to generate this list.

If anyone wants the complete list and would like to edit them down to the best thousand each, please let me know.

For those curious about the program, I made a number of vocabulary lists based on the Pal-ul-Don glossary at the end of Tarzan the Terrible. A= words beginning with a vowel, B= words beginning with a consonant, C= words ending with a vowel, D= words ending with a consonant, E= all words.
The formula is simple, Ho-Dom male names use B+D, Ho-Don female names use A+E+C and so forth. The computer then spews out thousands of combinations that fit that formula and I just have to delete those that make no sense like AdAdAd-EnEnEn which fits the rule for a Ho-Don name but translates as 3-6, hardly a desired name for your son.
