A META head contains all the information that search engines use to categorize your site: a site description and keywords. Without METAs, the only way people will find your site is by word of mouth or by chance. The description of your site must stay on-topic and not use repetitous content. Phrase it like a descriptive summary, 25 words or less. The keywords must also not be repetitious. Use only words that relate to topics on your website. You can use lots of these. Unfortunately, the current version of GeoBuilder doesn't have a way for you to put these descriptions and keywords into the HEAD tag of a page. The only way around this is to build a page with HTML, using the Advanced editor in the File Manager, and linking the page to your GeoBuilder web site. The page must be your index.html page so you will have to rename your current GeoBuilder index.html to something else. I renamed mine oldindex.html. This is not all that difficult and scary to do. There doesn't have to be much more than the META info on the page, and a GeoGuide, of course. |

My original META page had a jump command that took the person viewing the page to my GeoBuilder website in 30 seconds. It was a great way to get to my website, but I later found out that search engines tend to see jump pages as signposts and ignore them. That means they (the search engines) don't acknowledge any of the META information, so I changed the META code so that people must click on a link to go to my website. I put a background image on my META page, as you have most likely seen already, and sound effects, but you can keep it simple with just the "Click here to go to my website" dialogue. It's your choice how the page looks. |

The instructions are pretty lengthy, and since I have them available in a nice, printable document, I'm going to just put a link to that document here instead of typing it all on the page. You'll want a printout of the instructions handy anyway, when you're ready to tackle the META head page. You will need to insert your own information in the META page tags wherever you see red type. The tags in blue type are the visual enhancements for the page and can be changed or deleted, except for the "Click here to go to my website" text and link tags. Be sure to copy ALL the code between the lines for your META page, and be sure to activate your GeoGuide. The GeoGuide on GeoBuilder pages is activated for you automatically, but not so with standard HTML pages. If you don't activate the GeoGuide you will have one or more popup ads on the page each time someone accesses it. |
