There is a lot to building an Internet site, and because this site covers most of the basics there is a lot to absorb here!
This page gives the questions and answers that I've received, either because the topics are beyond the scope of this site or because some topics need extra explanation.
By reading over this site and these questions, you should cover everything you need to start your new site. If you'd like to buy some HTML help books at 20% off, visit the new Em's Quick-Build Web Guide bookstore.
Q: I can't make my own banner...who can help me?
A: There are lots of generous people who will volunteer their time to make a banner for you.
If you want a banner for the Geocities Geoguide, visit this huge list of volunteers.
If you want your banner for either the Geoguide or Link Exchange, visit Eugenie's Page and click on "Free Stuff".
Please be nice to these people...they're helping you out of the goodness of their hearts! Make sure you always give them credit somewhere on your site!
Q: Can I put my own pictures on my site?
A: You sure can! If they're currently on bits of paper or photos, you'll need to use a scanner and save the pictures as a .gif file.
Now you can treat them just like any graphic file and follow the instructions in the graphic section of this site!
Q: I want to make it so that you can click on a button/graphic and you'll link to other page...is that possible?
A: Sure is...just treat the graphic like any piece of text. Follow the directions for creating links but replace the text with the graphic tag.
Q: Can I track the visitors to my site?
A: The best way to do this is to use a Guestbook on your site. This allows visitors to leave you messages and tell you about themselves.
Q: So how do I get a guestbook? A: Geocities provides all homesteaders with a free guestbook, all you need to do is set it up! For instructions on setting up your guestbook, click here.
Q: I'm sure I set-up the code for my graphics properly, but all that shows on my page is a little box with a cross in it. What's wrong?
A: Well, assuming that you have put the code in correctly, the most common problem is that you've forgotten to upload the actual graphic file onto the Geocities server (a very common mistake).
To do this, go to the File Manager and use the EZ-Upload facility at the bottom of the page. Click on the browse button and search for the graphic (.gif or .jpg) file name. Then press upload and your computer will copy the graphic file onto the internet.
Q: How do I make that copyright symbol ( the c inside the circle) appear?
A: Easy. Just type the two words:" & copy ", but without the space between them. They will magically transform into the symbol for you!
Q: I like the side contents panel this site has...how do I make one?
A: There are two ways to get the side panel on your site: tables or frames
(frames are harder to use and can cause all sorts of problems!).
Em's Quick-Build Web Guide was created using frames.
Instructions on how to create both are given at here...frames and tables.
Q: I want to put a pattern/graphic as the background of my site...how do I do this?
A: You'll need to use the Advanced Editor...instructions are given here.
To find matching sets of backgrounds, buttons and other free graphics visit Helen.
Q: How do I add a chat room to my site?
A: For instructions on adding a chat room, visit the HTML-Goodies.
Q: Can I add sounds to my site?
A: You sure can. For instructions, visit the sounds section of this site.
Q: Gee, Em. Your site has helped me so much...how can I ever repay you?
A: Please add the following link to your site so that I can help others too!
Just copy & paste the following to your site...
