Save For Web Photoshop 5.5
By Roxanne Etheridge

There are many neat new features in Adobe's Photoshop 5.5 and Image Ready 2, but the one I have used the most so far is the 'file>save for web' command to save images from Photoshop. Instead of saving and reopening in Image Ready, or exporting to another optimization program as I previously would have done, I just click file>save for web. Here are the how's and why's.

1. After creating an icon in Photoshop 5.5, I go to file>save for web [ fig 1 ]

2. The image appears in the save for web window shown in [ fig 2 ] below. The tabs at the top of the window allow you to customize your view of the workspace for greater productivity. Choosing the 2 up tab gives you a view of the original image and the optimized image at the same time. You can try different settings and compare them by choosing the 4 up tab. The size of the image and download time are shown in the pane with each.

3. In saving images for the web, you want to create the best looking image with the smallest possible file size. The settings on the right side of the window in [ fig 2 ] above combined with multiple viewing options take the guesswork out of this task.
