Darlington and the locality
Darlington is a large market town in County Durham, England, with a population of over 100,000.
There are three Boys' Brigade companies in the town, the 1st, 2nd and the 5th.
The town is famous for having the first public railway in the world, which ran from Darlington
to Stockton. (Approx 15 miles, 20km). The engine, the locomotion no. 1, was designed and built by
George Stephenson. There has just been an unveiling of a Brick sculpture of a steam engine
to mark the millennium along one of the major roads into Darlington.
Darlington is surrounded by one of the most beautiful and remote parts of England.
The Penine Hills, Durham Dales - which includes England's biggest waterfall,(by volume of water), High Force.
North Yorkshire Moors and Dales and the Cleveland hills, are all within one hour's car travel.
This makes it perfect for expeditions and outdoor activities.
