April 2001 / Issue #215
Take the horror biz getup thrash of the Misfits and the pop punk goofiness of the McCrackins and add an unmatched sense of humor and you'll get within a few blocks of BFS. Band members have names like "Fuck" and "Captain BoredOutLeftEyeSocket." Every song has the word "skull" in the title ("Four Skulls and Seven Ears Ago," "Skulls That Ride City Buses").
They sound like a pop Misfits (which is where I woulda pegged the Undead). The cover and band history inside is funnier than hell. Beer swillin' music for the new millenium!

So there is this Big Fuckin Skull that came to Earth and basically took it over and got the fuck outta town...and well.... actually the story goes on but I'll make you go read it for yourself; it's pretty interesting and it tells the story behind the band Big Fuckin Skull! Big Fuckin Skull is a group of 6 fuckin skulls that joined together to form a band and sing about....you guessed it.... The Big Fuckin Skull! 16 songs to be exact.
With nothing but great morbid, violent lyrics backed with chainsaw guitars and fast beats, Big Fuckin Skull is a great addition to any horror punk fan's cd collection. I have to say, after listening to this cd, about 1000 times, I realized I really have to check them out live. From the looks of their pics on the back of the cd layout it looks like they put on one hell of a show.
So if you like kick ass punk, the word fuck and if you worship The Big Fuckin Skull then do your part to help bring The Big Fuckin Skull back to Earth and visit the Big Fuckin Web Site and see Big Fuckin Skull live!!!!

So here's the story. A group of 5 friends got together one day and decided it would be a riot to start a band. Pretty typical story, eh? Here's where it gets weird.
They decided to call themselves the Big Fuckin' Skull. Furthermore, they decided that each song would have the word 'Skull' in the title and be about skulls that kill people. Weird? You betcha! Let's jump ahead a few years.
Four days ago I was given the Big Fuckin' Skull debut CD for review. Seeing the album, the song titles and the bio sheet I thought "This is a Big Fuckin' Joke" and went off to work. Upon returning home I decided to check out the rest of the Big Fuckin' Skull promotional materials. Seeing the picture of the band stalking down a dark street wielding instruments and street signs as weapons, with face paint on made me think of the Insane Clown Posse. Still, I remembered what my mom told me about pre-judging. It's bad. So reluctantly I popped the CD into my player and prepared myself for a bad metalcore type band.
First of all, let me assure you that Big Fuckin' Skull don't play metalcore. They play a well proportioned combination of street/Oi, hardcore and pop punk. Mixing sing along anthemic choruses with angry, raging vocals and loud but poppy melodies. Sonically Big Fuckin' Skull remind me of a mixture of bands like the Misfits, Bonecrusher, The GC5, The Exploited and Fury 66. Loud, raw and vicious but with an underlying poppy melodic consistency. Big Fuckin' Skull may use their instruments as weapons from time to time, but they're also pretty good at playing them.
I found myself enjoying the album despite my original thoughts. Lyrically... let's just say that this isn't Bob Dylan. Big Fuckin' Skull enjoy the use of words such as 'Fuck', 'Kill', 'Maim' and 'Destroy', but that all plays into the band's theatrics. Those easily offended shouldn't bother listening to Big Fuckin' Skull but what the hell would they be doing checking out a punk rock album anyway?
Big Fuckin' Skull are not your typical band, that is obvious. They fall into the "Green Jelly/Misfits" category. They're out to shock as well as entertain. Had their lyrics been political or social they would have quickly been recognized by the street/Oi fans. By choosing a theme for their band and songs they limited themselves and their audience. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because, trust me, this album is pretty damn good. It makes for a nice change from all the "boy loses girl", political, social, and personal songs out there. People sensitive to teenage violence may deem this "the soundtrack to high school shootings". I'm pretty sure Big Fuckin' Skull would only be honored by such label.
It's not for everyone and if you take your punk rock very seriously you may want to pass on this album. If, on the other hand, you can take a joke and enjoy something a little different Big Fuckin' Skull is worth checking out. The release is full of humor (check out the band history on the insert or the bio sheet) and you will catch yourself laughing out loud. Fans of the Misfits and other horror rock bands will definitely eat this up.
I would also suggest checking out a live Big Fuckin' Skull show. Judging by the energy on the album and the theatrical looks, Big Fuckin' Skull are capable of putting on one good show.

I’m really tongue-tied with this review. 5 guys, 16 songs, and nothing but skulls. Everything on this album is about skulls eating people. I’m dead serious. EVERY SONG. I’m not sure if this is lunacy or so basic that it’s genius. And to top it off, every song has the word “skull” in it. For example, a couple songs titles are “Skull Eat Skull” and “Last Skull Standing”. At first glance, you’d expect something of the death metal genre but BFS play straight forward, no nonsense punk rock. And it’s the same throughout every song on the album. The only real variation I noticed was a little beer bottle throwing in “Skull Fu” and some piano at the beginning of “I Found A Skull”. But that’s quite all right because you actually find yourself wanting to listen how they can squeeze 16 skull-eating songs in one album.
They sort of remind me of Kiss and the Candy Snatchers intertwined with some Wretched Ones tossed in. Oh I make the Kiss reference because I forgot to mention that they paint their faces like skulls. You can’t help but find the whole concept humorous but it works for them. I’m surprised that they don’t have a larger fan base outside of Minneapolis, but I’m sure that will change quickly soon. Great packaging here as well, for a self-released album. Very professional.

I thought this would be a really bad joke when I first got the CD. I mean, it's a band called Big Fuckin' Skull with an album called Six Skulls Against The World, and EVERY song is about, yes, SKULLS. Well, some of this stuff is pretty funny and foul-mouthed, and you'll probably like it if you like Misfits-style gore.
There's a ton of background "whoa's", catchy and fun hooks, but I must stress that this is definitely NOT pop-punk! They fuckin's say fuck alot, you fuckin' fucks, so if your mommy doesn't let you listen to dirty words, you better fucking play this quietly. Otherwise, grab a beer, crank it up, and have fun listening to this one.

"In the beginning, there was the BFS. When or where it came from doesnt matter, but it was no doubt a really mean and shitty place..." The liner notes go on like that.
Five lunatics, four instruments, vocals all over, 16 songs about skulls that kill people, and it is one of the best bands, signed or unsigned I have listened to in a long time.
Damn 16 songs about skulls that kill people and I think this CD fuckin rocks big skulls. BFS sounds like the Misfits, you know; kinda horror rock, with some real good punch lines about murder and mayhem.

I wasn't sure what to think about a band that writes songs about skulls that kill. I definitely wasn't sure what to think about a band with a name like Big Fuckin Skull. After hearing it, I still don't know what to think, but I like it. This raw energy, punk heavy, in your fuckin skull, kick ass groove will blow you away!
Not only does every song on this album contain the word skull, but everyone is packed full of pure energy and mayhem. This album is simply a good time. The humor of the music will have you crying with pure amusement. This is great music for those who need that release. It's fun, powerful, and easy to enjoy. You just can't ask for a better style of music than that.

How to make Jordan laugh: send him a cd by a band called BIG FUCKIN SKULL, in which all 16 songs are about skulls, and where all five band members dress up in horror paint and blood. This CD is a riot!!!! AND, the music is pretty good too.
I'm not a huge fan of novelty bands, but this had me on the floor kickin in laughter. Overall, this is pretty much three chord punk rock, with a strong resemblence to the DEAD KENNEDY's without the intellectual wit, or BLANKS 77, without the grit. As for humor and creativity though, they have plenty. Every track has "skull" in its title, and a lyrical connection as well. That takes some spirit folks...
The following titles had me cracking smiles, "Skulls that Ride City Buses," "Skull Eat Skull," "Four Skulls and Seven Ears Ago," "Skulls and Dolls," and, "the Dead See Skulls.."
This band happens to hail from the lovely northern state of Minnesota, and for some reason, it seems that these guys probably don't get out all that often. Sixteen songs was quite a bit to handle, but the music did keep things moving.
I absolutely love the cover art to this disc, with the band's giant skull logo. This whole band / project screams of something that probably was thought up of during a high school study hall. I probably won't find myself listening to this all too often, but I highly doubt that I'll forget the moment of when I first opened up the packaged it came in, and saw what was inside.

"In the beginning there was the Big Fuckin Skull. When or where it came from doesn't matter, but it was no doubt a really mean and shitty place." That's how the story begins as told in the accompanying CD sleeve.
If you haven't guessed already, Big Fuckin Skull is far from your average punk band. The cover art portrays flying skulls, one of which is biting the arms off someone. The sixteen tracks all contain the word "skull" in the title. Portraits of the band's five members (with names such as "Rafe Torso" and "Fuck") portray them decked out in full face paint with fake blood and all that. Beyond that, it's just an album full of songs about girls. Ha ha, not quite.
The album has a simple old school garage sound. There's some occasional melody, as gritty as it may be, highlighting some songs like "Jacob's Fuckin Skull" and "I Found a Skull (and it ain't my skull)". My favorite song is probably "Skulls That City Buses" or "Four Skulls and Seven Ears Ago", if not just for the names.
Despite it being kind of simplistic in its music, Six Skulls Against the World is an entertaining release and a humorous spin on the whole Misfits/Samhain breed of death punk.

Artist: Big Fuckin Skull
Album: Six Skulls Against The World
Year: 2001
Genre: Killing Skull Music
Imagine (if you can warp your puny human mind around the concept) a band who's sole purpose is to sing songs about big skulls that eat people. Einstein couldn't have created a better concept for a band, even if he was really high.
I'll tell you, the music ain't bad either -- but it's 10 times better when you find out the name of the band is "Big Fuckin Skull." I know that sounds totally ridiculous, but I defy you to name one person that goes to see Gwar for the music.
Good, raw, garage-punk is what you'll get, replete with countless instances of the words "fuckin" and "skull." Don't get any stupid ideas and create drinking games that revolve around the use of these two words on Six Skulls Against The World -- You'll have to get your stomach pumped by song number two.

BIG FUCKIN SKULL:
Fuckin Skulls Kill Kill: CD-EP
Of all the End Times eschatologies being promulgated out there these days, none seem more befitting our worthless species than the one based on the murderous rampage of an enormous disembodied humanoid skull with wings and its insatiable appetite for human bodies, which it munches on like so much screaming Jiffy Pop popcorn. Seems to me as plausible as any of the pudding-headed apocalypse scenarios that have grown up like stink weeds from Jehovah’s Bible and it’s certainly as colorful. And giving us a blow-by-blow account of it as it all unfolds in it’s blood-slopped beauty, is not some shrill, multi-chinned toad of a televangelist, but a group of mean-spirited, real life Clockwork Orange-type thugs in skull make-up with unabashed tastes in ultra-violence and bench pressing. This compact six song sampler comes across like a pair of brass knuckles right in the choppers and it almost seems to laugh at you as you gag on your own broken teeth. This is Misfits style street punk complete “whoa-oh-oh” backing vocals and plenty of cool fuckin swear words that Danzig ’s Scientology etiquette would never allow him to utter. Cool fuckin shit. Now how about if you guys take some time off from randomly beating people up and finish up that full-length we’ve been hearing about for the last few years?
