The Toast of the Town
©1997 35" x 35"
Created for "It Seams Funny To Me", a juried show of humorous quilts sponsored by the San José Museum of Quilts. Hand appliquéd, hand quilted, embellished with beads and embroidery. This quilt is a symbolic portrait of the complex relationships and challenges that make up our everyday lives, the political crises we face, and mankind's search for meaning at the end of the 20th century. OK, I lied. It's just a quilt about toast.

Cows On Vacation
©1995 20" x 24" Hoffman Challenge, 1995 (3rd Place, Appliqué)
Two cows went on vacation, and here are their photos and some of the souvenirs they collected. The subtitles of the snapshots are "Mama in her Muumuu" and "Cowabunga, Dude!" Hand appliquéd, hand quilted, embellished with beads and embroidery.

Tropical Drinks
© 1993 40" x 46"
The inspiration for this piece was a bright lime green Midori martini, observed in the hotel lobby during a wonderful gathering of my online quilting friends in Sacramento, CA in 1992. The festive colors and the scattered embellishments add to the party atmosphere. Machine pieced, hand quilted, with appliquéd and embroidered details.

The Fire Inside
©1999 62" x 75"
The Fire Inside marks a return to piecing for a while, after several years of appliqué. Technically, it's a string quilt, a foundation pieced quilt design based on long strips and odd-sized scraps. Brilliant color and light are important elements to me, especially for their emotional impact. This quilt was created during a difficult time in my life, when I was struggling with some major decisions and realized that I had the inner drive to make some difficult choices. The Fire Inside is about the secret passions deep inside, that spurs us on to reach our innermost desires. Machine pieced, hand quilted using a variety of threads, including hand-dyed thread from ArtFabrik.

Hawaiian Shirts and Ties
©1989
At the time, this quilt was a risk and a total departure for me. The original pattern was based on a piece of gift wrap printed with little shirts and ties. I reinterpreted them in wild tropical fabrics and the rest is history! Machine pieced, hand quilted.

The Late Show
© 1993 38" x 31"
Hoffman Challenge, 1993 (2nd Place, Appliqué)

My best friend in high school was Barry Greenberg. We spent a lot of weekend nights together watching tacky grade B sci-fi movies on late night TV. Barry died in 1987 from AIDS. This quilt is for him. The Late Show was also my first foray into broderie perse appliqué. It's also my favorite quilt of all my quilts. Hand appliquéd, hand quilted, embellished with beads and embroidery.

Cold Winter's Night
©1999 50" x 80"
A cold night in late December, haloes crystallizing around street lights, no one else on the street. The quilt speaks of the beauty, sadness and isolation of a Cold Winter's Night. Machine pieced on muslin foundation, tacked with metallic embroidery floss.

Spring Comes to Lee's Market
© (I can't find a date or measurements on this one)
We don't have many flower gardens in the city, but we do have Korean greengrocers. Lee's Market, at 77th Street and 1st Avenue always has a gigantic display of flowers. The riotous colors against a background of gritty concrete grey was my inspiration for this quilt. The pattern is an old favorite block design called Nosegay, or Bride's Bouquet. Machine pieced, hand quilted. (Cover quilt, Rodale's Successful Quilting Library, Creative Guide to Color and Fabric, 2000)

More quilt images will be added soon - Please come back for another look!
