Compositions

Here are a few short folk melodies I have composed. In the tradition of Celtic music, most of these are not meant to be played "as written," but are meant to "swing" For example, in Irish-style pieces, straight eighth notes are often played as dotted eigths followed by sixteenths.

Each tune is available in four different formats:
  • GIF:    Click on this to view the music on your web browser.

  • PDF:    Click this for a prettier version of the music (you must have the free Adobe Acrobat reader software).

  • ABC:    ABC is a music notation shorthand that is quite popular with the Celtic music crowd.

  • MP3:    Click on this to hear a (rough) recording of the song. You must have MP3 player software, which is available free on the web.

The Gips Jig
For Elizabeth Gips--A brave metaphysical explorer, whose journey will never really end.

The Slippery Dance Floor
A slip jig (of course!) which goes every which way, but somehow manages to land on its feet in the end.

The Gingersnap Reel
A lively tune I wrote for Ginger, who is not in the least bit snappish.

The Moondance Reel
A tip of the hat to Mister Van Morrison, more or less in the Celtic tradition.

Waltzes and Airs

The Coneflower Waltz
A tribute to coneflowers in August's garden and in Diane Bennett's wildflower meadow. The coneflower is perhaps better known as Echinacea, a healing plant.

Walking in Sunlight
A graceful tune for Elizabeth Gips and her garden.

Walking Ben Lomond
A simple song in the style of Scottish walking (and waulking) tunes, for the mountains in Scotland and in Santa Cruz.

Windy Spring
A song for my sister, whose strength and grace never cease to amaze me.

The Slow Slide
Another song of vaguely Scottish extraction (somewhat like myself).

Odds and Ends

Caravans
A song with middle-eastern flavor. In the 500-Kbyte MP3 file, this haunting tune is played by my duo,   Dobhran ,   in a set with an ancient English dance melody called Goddesses.

The Slobovian Washerwoman
A Slavic-influenced dance tune in 7/8 time. Watch out for that "C" section...

The Slobovian Fisherman
Another dance tune in modified 7/8 time. Lots of fun with a driving rhythm guitar behind it.

A Trip to the Sun
A transmogrification into 4/4 time of the quirky Welsh jig, "Jump at the Sun."
