There seems to be so many disturbing
and troubling images being presented to the public today. Turning
on the television requires an almost toughening of spirit to
digest the majority of programing. Additionally, newspapers and
magazines headline societies current malady. In a personal response
to this type of negative imagery, I concentrate on providing
a visually meditative, potentially even spiritual moment on an
individual level.
My paintings address this content
revelation through the formal use of atmospheric space, personalized
scale, and evocative color schemes (which are inspired by the
glowing sunsets and sunrises here in Central Illinois). The watercolor
medium has always been a passion of mine. "Watercolor
is a form of breathing color, and to me has the sensation of
an incantation", states watercolorist Paul Jenkins.
It lends itself to soft, translucent passages of color that evoke
ethereal atmospheric sensations. Something about deep space and
rich colors touches an inner resonance within me.
In my photos, the importance
of visually activating the imagination occurs through the use
of double exposure and within images which reflect unusual patterns
of light or vantage points. Altering reality in my double exposure
prints, transforms a traditional subject by juxtaposing it with
another image that appears to be out of context. I am drawn to
the interweaving of separate layers of reality into one. The
repetition of patterns, light, and textures which move to and
from the picture plane visual intrigue me. The result of this
technique makes the images more mysterious and elusive. As another
artist Francis Bacon states, "The job of the artist is
always to deepen the mystery."
