![]() Just to let everyone know, I have my own space for this now. This site has been migrated to http://blaktauna.com/slash. Update those bookmarks now! Hong Kong Film is a fertile ground for Slash. Watch any old school kung Fu flick from the Shaw brothers. Watch any triad film from the 70's up to today. There is a long tradition of male bonding in HK films and sometimes that bonding tips over into the realm of something a bit more earthy. Watch "The Killer" and "A Better Tomarrow" from John Woo. John just loves to show "brotherliness" in his movies. Witness Danny Lee and Chow Yun Fat in the Killer. They should have just gotten a room. In ABT, Chow Yun Fat and Ti Lung were a bit more subtle but it was plain that the relationship was probably somewhat more than simply friendship. Then, there is Chang Cheh. I'll swear this is the man who created the concept of "brotherliness". There are rarely women in his films. He gets the most beautiful boys Shaw Studios had and made buddy films with them. He really went to town with David Chiang and Ti Lung. These two actors had wonderful rapport and Chang Cheh exploited it for all it was worth. Whether or not he knew it, he made some of the finest love stories ever put on screen; ok so it was between two men, but that's neither here nor there. These films need to be seen to be appreciated. Unfortunately they are ridiculously difficult to find. Duel of the Iron Fist is fairly available and so are the 5 Deadly Venoms [student and lizard, what a lovely set]. Trust me, you will not be disappointed... Burning glances, vague references to brotherhood... I just love buddy films. Fallen AngelsWong Kar Wai's Fallen Angels ia an exceptionally weird film which casts Leon Lai Ming as an assassin. This boy has the face of an angel (no doubt the inspiration for the title) and looks about as much like as an assassin as Shirley Temple. Its not that He and Takeshi really interact at all in the film but there was a burning desire on my part for them to do so.
Click on the pic for a closer look... Curry & PepperA pretty good cop/buddy film from Blackie Ko. Curry go and Jiu jai are decidedly closer than one might expect. Curry [Cheung Hok Yau] was all over Jiu [Chow Sing Chi] in this movie. Cuddling, sharing clothes, burning stares. The dialogue is amazing and if you get the Tai Seng tape release, the music will toss you into paroxysms of disbelief. I never thought I'd appreciate Michael Bolton but I do now...
Magnificent ButcherThese stories are form the great Sammo Hung / Kwan Tak Hing movie, Magnificent Butcher. It tells the tale of Butcher Wing, a disciple of the famous Wong Fei Hung. This story is about two of Butcher Wing's brothers in Kung Fu: Chai (played by Yuen Biao) and Fung (played by Wei Pai). A small series by Renee Tremblay. Tell her if you want more!Young and DangerousThis prime piece was written by Renee Tremblay, mistress of intensity. This story is from the popular Young and Dangerous series. The two boys involved here are Ho-Nam (played by Ekin Cheng) and Tin Yee (played by Michael Tse Tin Wah). Nam is a bright gang leader, but with some things, he's not so bright. Warning here for some masochistic type stuff.more from Renee will arrive shortly! The Piratedirected by Chang Cheh.Shang Pao and Da Wei started out as enemies but you know... beauty tames the savage heart. Da Wei took one look and well, it a good thing he came from money cause he sure isn't going back to bounty hunting any time soon...
Shang Pao and Da Wei have lots of interesting adventures... spoilers for the movie are in story 1.
the Android's Dungeon has some nice musings about Chow Yun-Fat. Fucking and Slash Fan's Guide to HK movies is new and fun.
