Bog Turtle

Clemmys muhlenbergii

I could hardly say more about the bog turtle than "John" of Dorothy Goodwin Elementary said in this riveting report.

"The Bog Turtle

The Bog Turtle is small and brown with yellow, orange or red marks on its head. It lives in marshes, rivulets, and bogs of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. It likes to eat tadpoles, slugs, worms, snails, and insects. The Bog Turtle is one of the smallest turtles. It usually grows 3-3’/3 inches but the record is 4 1/4 inches. Its common name is Muhlenberg’s Turtle. Its scientific name is Clemmys Muhlenbergi. The Bog Turtle is endangered because it lives in high populated areas. People are building on bogs and other places it can live. It’s now extinct in places where you could barely walk past a pond without tripping over one. This turtle should not die. It eats pests like slugs, mosquitoes and flies. This turtle , the Bog Turtle, must be protected."

It seems that many persons named John are interested in bog turtles. This message was posted by John Cherry of Cherryville Farms on November 5, 1997, just after the bog turtle was declared "threatened."

"Everyone that is working with the Bog Turtle should be aware that today the FF&W dept. listed the Bog as a threatened species. This makes it illegal to ship them across state lines etc. without a USDI license. Be careful!"

Despite John Cherry's frantic sounding warning, it is fortunate for these little turtles that the commie fascist government acted upon a whim to protect them. Your humble narrator has heard that a pair of these little treasures may fetch up to $2,000 on the Japanese black market.

An excellent article on the bog turtle.
