Like the good books page here are some comments on stuff I like to listen to.
The common thread through all (well, virtually all) the stuff I listen to is the strength of the lyrics. Lyrics don't come much finer than those by Leonard Cohen and this, his latest album is no exception. From the sinister glory of the title track to the simple hymn of 'Anthem' this is a very fine album.
REM's last album as a four-piece is only 5 years old and already an overlooked album. With the departure of Bill Berry (drummer) this could very well be the last indispensible REM album. A band that has acheived such consistent quality in their work is very rare. This effort shows that with songs like 'Undertow' and 'So fast, so numb' the band is one of the greats of our time. Timeless.
Folk music. Not many people like it. But it doesn't come better than this. Devoid of songs concerning ferrets or pixies, this album trawls through British history and touches heavily on pressgangs and human loss. The most modern song on the album 'Blackleg Miner' exibits the raw hatred felt for those who went down the pits during the strikes of the 40's.
Steeleye Span HomepageIf those box sets in record stores catch your eye, then this is a must. Not only is it lavishly packed, it contains a fairly comprehensive collection of the best band of the 60's. Never before or since has a band given us such gems as 'Venus in Furs' and 'Sweet jane' and still remained out of the limelight for so long. The 4 classic albums give us Avant-garde, Heavy metal, folk and pure pop, each in turn. The best 40 quid I ever spent on albums I owned anyway...
Bach played in a jazz style by a fantastic pianist & his trio. The music from the Hamlet cigar advert (that'll mean nothing to those outside the UK).
Avro Part - "Passio"
Lou Reed - "Ecstacy"
Saint Low - "Tricks for dawn"
