WET #52: A New Galaxy!

WET 52: Galaxy Oceanica

Since I was rather spacy this week, I think it's appropriate that I discovered a wacky new galaxy...and named it Oceanica! I've focused on a specific cluster of very bizarre planets. :) Each planet was created from one of the images in the WET 52 collection, and all of the images were used. Maybe you can figure out which is which!

Please! Do click on the thumbnail above to see the actual image. The thumbnail does NOT do justice to the colors and complexity of the full-sized image!

I followed this basic process for each WET element image: I first changed the canvas size to be a square the size of the longest side of the image. Then I pasted copy after of copy of the image so that the canvas was completely filled. Then I copied and pasted this filled image as a new layer over itself, rotated the new layer, then blended the two at 100% difference.

For the lifesaver, toys, and shell images I simply used the circle deformation at this point. For the drinking glass, I used unsharp mask before using the circle deformation. And for both the windsurfer and the starfish, I used both unsharp mask and hotwaxed before circle deforming. (Where used, the Unsharp mask setting was R=2.50 S=100% C=1; and the Hotwax foreground color was #E4EEF8.)

Next, to get each "planet" ready for copying to the final version, I selected its background, inverted the selection, contracted the selection 2 pixels, feathered the selection 2 pixels, and left it ready to copy.

I created a new image, then placed a copy of each "planet" on a different layer, dropshadowing each with a pale yellow (#F4F0B0) to get the glow. (Drop Shadow settings were 2,2 with Opacity=100 Blur=30.) The starry background layer was made by placing a pure white layer over a dark blue layer, then blending at 1% dissolve.

I saved the whole thing as a .psp file, then finally merged all the layers and saved a copy at 40% compression as a jpg for the web.

Everything on this page was done in Paint Shop Pro 5, using only the original filters and functions supplied with the program.
