In keeping with the spirit of Rain God's choices for this week's WET 61, I used these religiously significant items in a geographically oriented manner.
I found a simple black and white outline map, then made a transparent image with some shading and shadowing to the lines to make them blend smoothly, then did some preliminary filling and selecting to avoid rough edges on each continent's shape.
When the outlines were smooth, I "set this aside," and made my fill images from the original WET by layering multiple copies of an image upon itself in a rhythmic way to create a pattern.
I used each of these patterns to fill a continent on a new layer copied from the map layer. There were several separate transparent layers, and I did a lot of erasing and some pixel level correction so that each layer contained only one continent. The background was done separately and then added to the rest as another layer before merging.
The background was a sunburst fill, with uniform noise added at 3% (which smoothed the original nicely, but I still got some banding when I compressed for a .jpg). The "matting" and frame were done with the two sunburst colors, using fibonnaci series
numbers (1,1,2,3,5,8...) for good proportions.
I had fun with this idea, and would enjoy doing a more detailed and varied "theological" map by using many more images and filling more specific areas with them.
