jerkwater (town)
A small, rural town. Steam trains sometimes gathered water from troughs laid
between the rails, and the passing engine jerked water up from the
trough with a scoop; hence, a jerkwater town was one that a train would
not stop in even to take on water. It's also been said that a jerkwater
was a small town just big enough to have a water tower where the train
stopped only long enough to take on water, but not big enough to have
a station; the jerk comes from the engineer jerking the water pipe
down from the tower.
