Music

Music makes my life go 'round. Without it, life would be much more grim and unpleasant than it is already; with it, I can take on the World. I don't know about you, but for me those brief hits of auditory ecstasy are the spice that makes life worth living. I don't own a TV and rarely go to movies, and I'm one of those wierd misfits for whom videos actually ruin the tune. Give me a decent stereo (even a walkman) however and a darkened room with my favorite tapes, and I am snug in the warm, wet womb of heaven.

These are a few of my favorite things ...

The Ambiophonics Institute is Ralph Glasgal's ongoing project to create 3-D "holographic" sonic realism from 2-channel stereo, and it seems to work really well. This is NOT the same thing as Ambisonics, which requires multichannel reproduction. They're linked through the Surround Sound Discography below, if you're interested. Do check out Ralph's site though - according to him, all my live bootleg tapes have the potential for concert hall realism. Cool!

Steve Foskett's Bootleg How-To is must-reading for anyone interested in making their own bootleg tapes. This little essay is great: Foskett tells you everything you need to know, doesn't waste words (or your time) and reveals information that might seem hard to believe to the un-initiated. You can't ante up with an empty hand, or an empty pocket, so read this astute tutorial and get some aces up your sleeve - and batteries in your socks!

And if you're REALLY interested in Surrepetitious Tape Recording ...

Cool And Strange Magazine is a magazine - an actual PRINTED magazine! - about music that is not only cool, but also strange, and vice versa. Just like in the Blues Brothers movie, they got both kinds!

Are you too stupid to think of a name for your band??

8-Track Heaven is the ultimate website for all things 8-track. It cannot be praised enough. Go to it!

Dada'quarium's Exotica

Goldmine Magazine is a great source for music, any kind, any format ... even 8-track.

The Surround Sound Discography could also be called "4-Channel Heaven" for its thoroughness in presenting *everything* about quadraphonics, ambisonics, etc. - a *must-visit* site. (thanks to DJ Jay for telling me about it!)

NOTE: Ambisonics is not the same thing as Ambiophonics - they're vastly different. Take a look!

Here is the Capitol Records Ultralounge.

Urban 75 is a pretty cool e-zine.

Tim Gracyk's Victrola, 78s And Player Piano Page does the same for those lovable old machines

Feeling self-indulgent? Wanna do it in a lounge? Then Vik Trola's Lounge Of Self-Indulgence is for you.
