Whenever people talk about the Second Amendment To The United States Constitution (to give it its full, splendiferous title) they almost always couch it in terms of guns. Either they point out that it specifically protects the right of the People to own and carry guns (true) or they claim it says that only the cops and military should have guns (false).
What I want to know is, where do they get the idea it's all about guns, anyway?
The full text of the Second Amendment reads,
Now, the wording of this little gem has had a lot of people confused for two centuries, and even those who know what it says try to confuse others for their own benefit. This is largely because of a misplaced comma between militia and being, like this:
In fact, there is no such comma, and it wouldn't matter if there was. The subject of the sentence is not militia and the amendment does not refer to any rights reserved for the militia, regardless of whether you think "militia" means all males aged 17 to 45 or just the badged, licensed and identity-card-carrying criminocrats who oppress others for your satisfaction. The part of this sentence before the comma is really just a modifier, what English teachers call an adjectival phrase which adds description and elaboration to the basic sentence itself - the core of the sentence, if you will - but doesn't affect the meaning. Stripped of all embellishment, the full body of the Second Amendment actually reads,
Notice, it doesn't say guns, it says arms.
Just to be sure, and to save myself any embarrassment, I looked up the definitions of both arms and infringe. According to the 1971 edition of Webster's Third New International Dictionary, the word "arm" in this case means
And "infringe" means this:
Starting to get a bit exasperated, I looked up "trespass":
I'll do without "breach" thanks. Anyway, you get the idea. Just to be thorough, however, I'd like to also relate the verb form of "trespass" which is:
Ah, there now! That's a lot clearer than ol' Tom Jefferson wrote, hey?
Notice how all this does NOT apply only to guns. As noted, an "arm" is a weapon - ANY kind of weapon. And the good ol' Second Amendment sure does say "arms," not "firearms," doesn't it?
Notice also how broad an "infringement" can be. To infringe is to break down, destroy, defeat, frustrate, confute, refute, impair or weaken; to commit a breach of; to neglect to fulfill or obey; to VIOLATE, TRANSGRESS, ENCROACH or TRESPASS, period. SO, according to the Second Amendment, GOVERNMENT IS FORBIDDEN TO:
What this means, if you don't get it yet, is that all gun laws are unlawful, un-Constitutional, null, void, vapor, kaput, illegitimate, invalid, criminal and just plain WRONG!!!
Yes, that's all gun laws. Not just restrictions on the size of magazines or whether you can have a bayonet mount, but the Machine Gun Act of 1934. Whatever the damned law is, passed after Lee Harvey Oswald killed a tyrant with a mail-order gun, that forbids ordering guns by mail. Concealed carry laws. Laws forbidding children to have guns, or adults to give them guns. "Saturday Night Special" laws. Bans on "cop-killer" bullets. Background checks. Laws forbidding ex-felons to own guns. Restrictions on who can sell and who can buy. Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs). ANY kind of licensing. Laws that add prison time to convictions if the person convicted was caught with a gun. All this and more.
All unlawful. Un-Constitutional. Null. Void. vapor. Kaput. Illegitimate. Invalid. Criminal. Just plain WRONG.
The ban on weapons laws does not only cover firearms, but any kind of arms.
YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO OWN AND CARRY
This is the real meaning of the Second Amendment. It doesn't recognize your right to own and carry firearms; it doesn't even mention "firearms." The Second Amendment recognizes the right of the People to own and carry anything they damned well please as long as it's a weapon. And, you know, anything can be a weapon.
