NEW YEAR'S DAY NIGHT, 1993
The years run faster,
faster, exhale more deeply
than my life can; so
let my puppy keep up,
eagerly chewing days from rawhide--
my child, my only child
who hasn't barked at even one
year yet. created to hunt badgers,
he's dug a perfect hole for my love.
I won't invent once-yearly promises
to sleep on a pampered piece of paper
never snoring, never waking.
I have no discipline (they say)
no resolve to untangle complexities.
But my chair hugs my desires,
content in contuinueing support
as I study words suspended in air;
Tomorrow is hanging day
Where are the people
who can see?

NIGHT SHADOWS
Bats.
Bats and madwomen
Bats, madwomen and dogs lost from home
scurry in the small hours.
I cannot sleep. Gently,
only gently dare I touch
with the time-frayed fingers and tremors - -
that refection of a shadow
night finds bending in moonlight,
passing in sudden silence;
that reflection which is you.

HEALING (BY THE SEA)
The heart of my body recalls
a torture incomplete.
Not weaned, eager to be loved;
I search for a milky breast,
penduous longings.
Who can see the shape of forgiveness?
Sea.
A sort of adult baptism,
the present arrived so quickly;
anemic and pulverized, coated
with the brine of blood,
broken seashells of the past.
Who will conceal me?
Beach.
My denuded fears howl,
death throes of the aching.
There's no guaranteed after...
no life to disappoint the night,
but I hold the wind in hand.
What can be found?
Healing.

HOUNDS OF MIND
Ghosts with sunset eyes
approach with arrogance,
pursue my today.
I, encircled by reluctance,
futilely fight
the tormentors' commanding gaze.
I trust twilight,
already a pillar of lost words.
Madness
.......Plays in my grooves,
.......shortens the hem of my character,
.......encounters disordered graves,
but gives me apricots out of season.

JUST FRIENDS
It seems my love for you
is not my salvation;
I wish you would love me
as a lover loves.
I try to slow my heartbeat,
I camouflage my eyes, keep
my heands to myself,
try not to care
toomuch.
I want the contentment of my cats
who sleep in the sun,
eat when they want,
get petted and play.
But I don't have
four legs and fur.
Longing....
always this longing.
