Edit and Upload:
This is how I recommend that you edit your pages
at GeoCities.
Create a directory on your PC to keep all the
HTML (.htm, .html) files and Image (.jpg, .gif)
files for your pages (I named my directory
c:\sands1492). This is the master copy of your
pages, the copy at GeoCities is just so other
people can view your pages.
Creating your first (home) page. If you want
to create a totally new home page, follow the
instructions in the next paragraph, creating a
file named index.html (this is the default page
name for GeoCities addresses). If you are just
starting and want to use the GeoCities Starter
Page. Logon to the Internet, then using MS
Internet Explorer, browse to your GeoCities
address (for me it would be:
http:www.oocities.org/SouthBeach/Sands/1492).
You should be viewing the page GeoCities
automatically generated for you. On the MS
Internet Explorer 'Edit' menu, select the 'Page'
submenu item. FrontPage Express should open, and
download the page. In FrontPage Express, on the
'File' menu, select the 'Save As' submenu item.
When the Save As dialog opens, push the 'As File'
button in the bottom right. Navigate the Save As
File dialog to your page directory on your PC
(mine is c:\sands1492), then in the 'File name'
entry field fill in: index.html (this is the
default page name for GeoCities addresses).
To create a new page, open the Windows
Explorer, then navigate to your page directory on
your PC (mine is c:\sands1492). Click your Right
Mouse Button in a blank area in the directory
window, on the PopUp Menu, select the 'New' menu
item, on the submenu pick: New Microsoft HTML
Document 4.0.html . Windows Explorer will create
a new file and highlight it. Rename the file to a
name appropriate for your page (note: use only
lowercase letters and numbers eg: page1234.html).
Then double click on the new page file, and
FrontPage Express will open with a blank page. As
an alternative, you can start FrontPage Express
from the Windows Start Menu, create a new page
and then save it to your directory.
To edit an existing page in your directory,
open the Windows Explorer, then navigate to your
page directory on your PC (mine is c:\sands1492).
Click your right Mouse Button on the file for the
page, then on the PopUp Menu, select 'Edit',
FrontPage Express will then Open, loading your
page. As an alternative, you can start FrontPage
Express from the Windows Start Menu, then use the
FrontPage Express Menu 'File/Open' to open your
page file.
After you have created a page or made changes,
you then upload your page(s) and image files to
GeoCities. On my Upload Page,
I give several of the options for uploading your
files to GeoCities. Remember, the files on your
PC are the master copy of your pages, you
normally edit your pages from your local PC
directory, and then upload them to GeoCities.
Direct Edit and Save:
Although you can do this at GeoCities, I don't
recommend it, you can waste a lot of time trying
to save your page, and never succeed.
To edit your page, logon to the Internet, then
using MS Internet Explorer, browse to your page
at GeoCities. You should be viewing the page you
want to edit in MS Internet Explorer, on the
'Edit' menu, select the 'Page' submenu item.
FrontPage Express should open, and download the
page. You can than edit your page and make any
changes you want.
To save your page from FrontPage Express, on
the 'File' menu, select 'Save'. If you are
creating a new page, select 'Save As' and fill in
the full GeoCities address for the page in the
Page Location field (eg.
http://www.oocities.org/SouthBeach/Sands/1492/extab1.htm),
and press OK (Note: You must
capitalize the address correctly). You will get
several dialogs as FrontPage Express tries to
publish the page to GeoCities. Whenever it asks
for your UserId and Password, enter your
GeoCities member name and password. Eventually
(after many dialogs) you will get to a dialog
asking for FTP Information, fill in the
following:
FTP Server: ftp.oocities.com
SubDirectory:
/Neighbor/Hood/1234
Filling in your GeoCities neighborhood and
address for the SubDirectory (eg.
/SouthBeach/Sands/1492)
Note: You must capitalize the
address correctly (GeoCities is case sensative).
If you are lucky, and GeoCities isn't busy (it
is quite frequently), your page will be uploaded
to GeoCities. If you are unlucky, GeoCities will
be busy, or some other error will occur, then you
have to start all over again. After you have
tried this a few times, you will know why I don't
recommend this method at GeoCities.
