Sonic debuted on the Game Gear in the original game Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Game Gear system in 1991.

The Story

In this continues the struggle between Dr. Julian Ivo Robotnik and our hero, Sonic the Hedgehog. Dr. Robotnik the mad scientist, is snatching innocent animals and turning them into evil robots! Only one tough dude can put an end to the demented scientist's fiendish scheme. It's Sonic, the real cool hedgehog with the spiked haircut and power sneakers that give him super speed.

My Thoughts

This was a good game for the 8-bit console. It showcased new levels, new bosses, a new secret stage, and the new feature of keeping your shield into the next level!

Green Hill Zone

This is the easiest level in the game, with music similar to the music first seen in the Genesis version. Be on the look out for 3 different types of badniks: Crabs, Crawlers, and Buzzbombers. Robotnik is a breeze to, just hit him eight times when he first appears and he won't have time to swoop down and attack! Then go to the prison egg and release those squirrel and rabbits firends of yours.

The Bridge Zone

This is a good level that consists of jumping from bridge to bridge, but watch out for the bridges that don't dip in the middle, the will fall behind you. This level also has some very catchy music that'll have you humming the night away! Watch out for the two badniks in this level: Spike Tops, and Pirahna Bots. Robotnik is more difficult in this level than before. You'll meet him on two dip bridges. He'll come up on one of them and shoot three energy balls at you. Hit him as he's comig up eight times and he's finished! Then proceed to the prison egg and let out those poor pigs and chickens.

The Jungle Zone

In this level you go thorugh the jungle jumping up logs that fall down waterfalls(Sonic does this a lot through out the games so get used to it!) rolling logs in water to make the move, and walking along vines strung between branches that act as bridges. You'll also run in to two old friends: the Pirhana Bot and the Crabs. You'll also meet a new badnik; Cloaker Bots. Robotnik is east again in Act 3 of this level. He will meet you on a single vine-bridge and drop a bomb at you. It will roll across twice before stopping in the middle and blowing up. jump over it as it rolls at you and hi Robotnik twice. Repeat this pattern until robotnik is toast. Run to the prison egg and free the trapped squirrels and chickens.

The Labyrinth Zone

As the map will show, you have reached Robotnik's factory, but the game is far from over. Sonic appearently trys to sneak through the sewers, so you enter the Labyrinth Zone. This water-logged Zone is much like the Genesis version in that you must reach the surface, or find bubbles to breath. Also be on the look out for Grounders, Orbinauts, and Jaws. Robotnik is the hardest yet in this level. You will meet him in a room with a hole in the middle on the floor, and on the left and right sides of the roof. First he will appear in the middle. Hit himas many times as you can before he launches the two energy balls. Jump to the left platform next as he will come down above you hit him three or four times then go all the way to the left. He will launch a missle at you. Once it gets in front of you, it will fly straight at you. Jump over it and jump to the right platform. When he comes down, finish him off! Then head off to free the seals and penguins

Scrap Brain Zone

As you enter this level, the special stage will be inaccesible, as well as getting Chaos Emeralds. This level again, is much like its Genesis counterpart. You must be on the look out for moving conveyor belts, raising doors, electric fountains, and flame throwers mounted downwards on the ceiling. Also watch out for the two badniks: Catekillers, and Ballhogs. In Act 2 there are two different paths that both take you to the same place but both need to be beaten. It can be very frusterating to pass and iff you want to know how, here it goes! Travel through the level until you reach a lone button. To the left are two doors. One is opened and one is closed. When you hit the button, the open one will close and the closed one will open. It will alternate like this every time you pound the button, but no matter how hard you try, you won't be able to get through those doors. Position the doors so that the one closest to the button is closed. Now, backtrack to those two path changes again. This time go down. When you continue past the initial door, go right and you'll fall on a platform with a Ballhog. Destory him if you want, but it's quicker to move on. Head to the left and go down. You'l see another Ballhog. Bust him open or forget about him, but you need to head right. You'll reach a repeating pattern where you must head left, then right again, then you must do it again. After this third time, you'll come to a gap. Jump it and continue on. You'll go through a door. Behind it is a teleporter. Step inside to teleport to a part of the upper section of he pathway split. Walk to the left and you'll fall down in between those two alternate doors. But thanks to us pressing the button earlier, the pathway is now open! Continue on and you'll reach the end of the second Act. The third Act is a maze in itself. Certain doors will open for you, certain ones won't. However, there are rings in this Act unlike any time before, so try to gather them all. Go through the first door and bounce on the spring to get all the rings. Then, go back down and continue right from that spring. Then, fall into the hole you come to. There's a spring and a door down there. Go through door. Head right to anoher door. Go up and left, then go up and right. You should be at a conveyor belt. Go past it and go through the door. Go up with the spring. Go up and head right. You should have 50 rings at least. Fall down the LONG hole for a 1-up. Now, follow these directions: Up, Left, Up, Left, Up, Right, Up, Right, Up Left. Jump down the small hole grabbing the rings and bounce back up. Head left and hit the button to open the door. Continue left, bonce up and grab the rings, and go through the door on the right to get outside the factory and onto what seems like the roof with 81 rings. Hmm, I wonder who you'll meet out here? Robotnik runs away from you and jumps on a platform which carries him up to who knows where. Why don't we find out? Jump on the platform when it comes back down. It carries you up to the end of the act! Yep, no boss here, I guess the level was hard enough!

Sky Base Zone

This is the hardest level in the game with so much lightning and electricity arcing throughout the Zone. Watch out for this level's three types of badniks; Orbinauts, Cannons, and Bombbots. Watch out for the electricity begining to flicker as it warms up to warn you to jump out of the way before you're fried! When you get to the end of this Act you'll reach Robotnik's Flying ship. Act 2 is where you enter it. There are no shields in this level so try to bring one along with you from Act 1. Be on the constant look out for cannons that are placed throughout this level. And at one point you will be chased by a spike-cover wall! You will meet Bombbots as you are being chased so run up to them, run away, let them explode, and continue on. You will get to the part in the level where the cannons shot giant bullets that move slower than the energy balls and are easier to dodge. You'll then enter a room with arrows that point you to Act 3, the Final Zone...

The Final Zone

In this Act, you'll final encounter Robotnik who's got himself protected in a tube with a switch on the bottom. Whenever he jumps and lands on the switch, a ball of energy will form on the orb on the top of the screen. When it comes down, it will begin to home on you, so quickly jump to the other side of the screen right before it fires to make it miss you. Don't count out the energy ball just yet. It will correct its bearings and go towards you right before it goes through the ground. So be prepared and quickly jump back to the other side. Then, fire will come out of 3 tubes on the ground. It will come up in the order of: Left, right, middle. Be preared and ready to jump over them as they come up. Whenever you get the chance, nail Robotnik's tube. Twelve hits will break his tube. He will then run away from you and jump into a teleporter. Follow him in.....

The Ending

Robotnik is teleported by his teleporter right to his personal hovercraft. You then see him flying through Green Hill Zone to make his escape. But fortenatly for you the teleporter puts you right on top of Robotnik. You literally drop in on him and make his ship explode. Then, it shows the entire map and counts up the number of Chaos Emeralds you have collected, and awards you 20000 points for each emerald. The game then counts up the lives you had at the end of the game, and awards you 5000 points for each extra man. Finally, it awards you 10000 for every Special Stage you went to. Then it shows Sonic standing in front of a microphone and shows all the people involved in this game while playing a new mix song. I kind of sounds like the Sonic and Knuckles title screen and this game's Green Hill songs mixed in together! Congratulations!

Extra Life Trick

At the end of any level, if you have less than 50 rings and therefore cannot get to the bonus level, run through the turnstile and then stop and jump straight into the air. If the turnstile is off the screen, when is stops spinning, you come down and it should show a picture of Sonic and you'll recieve an extra life. This is a difficult trick to do an takes some practice to perfect.

Location of the Choas Emeralds

Note: One emerald is found in each of the first six zones.
Green Hill Zone: This one is easy to find. In Act 2, there is a waterfall area. You must fall down one (I forget which, sorry!) and you will fall to a secret room, the emerald is in clear sight at the right of the room.

The Bridge Zone: This is the easiest to find. In Act 1, the first straight log bridge you come to (the first one that the bridge falls apart) you should be able to see the emerald beneath you. Stand one the first log of the bridge and let yourself fall. As you are falling, jump to the ledge with the emerald on the left.

The Jungle Zone: This one is located in Act 1. Head to the first large waterfall (the one after the large spinning log with spikes) and ride towards the bottom of the falls on the log. At the last minute leap to the ledge on your left. Head left and jump onto the log in the water. Roll your way left (by running on the log) until you reach the ledge with the emerald. Grab it and head back right to finish the level.

The Labyrinth Zone: The fourth emerald is located in the second Act of this zone. Near the end of the labyrinth, at the top of the screen you'll find an Invincibilty power-up. Grab it and then head to your right as fast as you can (you really must go fast). You'll find the fourth emerald embedded in the spikes. If you still are invincible, you can grab it without harming Sonic (and who wants to do that??).

Scrap Brain Zone: In Act 2, get to where you come to the up slope and the down slope. Go across the up slope and you should come to three pits with fire shooters above them. Jump into the third pit and you'll fall down to a secret passageway. At the end this passageway is a transporter that takes you to yet another room. In this room run right and you'll find the fifth emerald.

Sky Base Zone: At the start of Act 2 run to the right. When the plane floats up as high at it will go, take a running jump off the first platform. You'll land on a series of floating platforms that eventually lead you to the last emerald.
