In The Mind's Eye > 7

Katriona drummed her fingers on the window. She could let them go now, but chances are, they'd hold the plane as long as they could until the boys were found.

She sighed, knowing she'd deeply regret it if the boys didn't understand what she was doing.

---

Zac stiffened. He had a huge headache, and his arm was very sore. He think the girl pulled a muscle.

---

She'll have to keep them until the plane took off.

"Who are you and what the hell do you want?" Taylor asked, turning around.

She tried her best to glare at him. "I'm someone you don't want to piss off."

He bit his lip and turned back.

---

Surely 3 against 1 would work, Taylor thought. Or 2, considering the driver.

She was just a girl.

---

Katriona eyed the two boys in front of her warily. She was not fooling herself that she could handle these two alone. They only co-operated because she had Zachary.

She looked at the boy next to her. He was rigid with fear.

Poor kid. She was tempted to give him a hug, but he'd probably die of terror.

She glanced out the window. It was completely dark, and it was difficult to tell where they were.

Good.

Katriona knew where they were, though. They were on the outskirts of Tulsa, heading for a small townhouse.

The van slowed and came to a stop.

"Everyone out." she directed.

They hopped out of the car, with Katriona keeping a tight grip on Zac. They headed blindly in the dark to the house.

Katriona found the doorknob and opened. The musty smell of an unused house greeted them.

She flicked on a light switch. Hard white light blinded them for a moment.

Katriona looked around. A small TV and a pile of beanbags had been placed in the room.

"Sit." she ordered Isaac and Taylor.

They sat onto the beanbags.

Katriona kept her grip on the scared Zac. She tried to avoid Isaac's glare. Taylor's wasn't much better.

"What do you want?" Isaac asked, his voice a near growl.

---

He felt stupid for falling into a trap like this.

The girl stared at him coldly. "I want to keep you here."

He sneered back as best he could. "Why?"

She shifted and Zac groaned.

"If you've hurt him, I swear I'll-"

"I haven't hurt him." she snapped.

---

Katriona put out a leg and pulled 2 more beanbags over to her. She sat down on one, and Zac sat in the one in front of her.

The silence ticked by.

"Let him go. He's just a kid." Isaac finally said.

Katriona stared at him hard. He had become less fierce. Perhaps more accepting of the situation. But she'd bet that it was a front.

Katriona shook her head. "I'm not stupid."

Isaac sighed. "Let Tay go. He won't do anything."

She laughed. "I just told you I'm not stupid. He'll go running back to tell everyone all about me."

Isaac scowled. "How could you do this?"

Katriona shifted her grip on Zac as he moved. "Easy."

"Why?" Taylor asked softly.

---

Zac was so tired. He tried to stay awake, but he couldn't. He didn't want to stay awake, anyways. He just wanted to go to sleep and wake up the way things were...

---

Katriona started when Zac fell back into her arms. He was a big boy, but she held him easy.

He lay on the beanbag, his head cradled by her.

---

Isaac watched the girl carefully as she held Zac up. A small smile played over her lips. What was that? Tenderness?

He shook his head.

She looked up, and her dark brown eyes met his.

---

Taylor propped his arms on his knees and rested his forhead on his arms. He couldn't believe this was happening.

The sound of a car came from outside.

He looked up, hopeful.

The girl grinned. "Hope you guys are hungry."

---

Isaac shook his head and looked up as another person entered the room.

"Al." the girl said.

The other person, who Isaac honestly couldn't tell was a male or female, gave the girl a sack. A big yellow M was on the bag.

Suddenly, his mouth watered.

The girl glanced into the bag. "Mmm."

The other person leaned down and murmered something to her.

The girl's eyes widened. "No. you can't."

The other person said something softly.

The girl sighed. "Okay."

her companion turned around and went back outside. Isaac could hear the car start up again.

She pulled a burger and fries out.

"Hungry?" she asked him.

He shook his head defiently.

---

"You are." she said simply, and slid the bag across the floor of the room.

Isaac grasped the bag and pulled the hot food out. There was also a bottle of Coke.

Taylor looked up and mumbled something.

Isaac mumbled back.

"Isaac." her voice came harshly.

He looked up.

"Turn on the TV."

He shuffled over and turned on the TV.

Isaac sat back down and glared at Katriona, but she ignored him, munching on a fry.

"Don't try anything. I've got a friend down the hall who's keeping quiet. But if you try anything, you're in trouble." she warned, watching the flickering screen.

Isaac's lips thinned.

Katriona sat back and waited, Zac's head resting on her arm.
