"Dad? What are you doing here?" I stared in disbelief. I had always hoped that he would come back, but I never actually believed that he would.
"I couldn't stand not seeing my little princess." He smiled at me; tears filling his eyes, waiting to spill over.
"I missed you." I wrapped my arms around his neck as he scooped me up, hugging me tightly.
"How have you been princess?" He placed me down and looked at me carefully.
"I've been good. I was in the hospital for two days, but I'm fine now."
He looked at me, as if examining me to be sure that I really was alright.
"I'm fine dad," I assured him.
"Alright, I believe you. Anything you wanted for your birthday?"
"Yeah, but I doubt it will happen," I mumbled sadly, tears brimming my eyes.
"And what would that-- I don't know Aura, it doesn't look too good. Your mother and I love you as much as the first day you were born, but our love for each other just isn't the same."
"Why not? Is it me? Did I disappoint you's in some way?"
"No, never. You could never disappoint us, we just--"
The doorbell rang loudly, ending his explanation. I cursed the person at the door, but maybe it was better if I didn't know. Then I could believe that it was me and not have to listen to their lies, denying my the truth. I pulled open the door and faced Zac.
"Hey Aura I-" He leaned in to kiss me.
I turned away from him and pushed open the door wider.
"Zac. How've you been? Taking care of my princess?" My father bombarded him with questions.
"I've been good sir. Don't worry, I'm taking care of her." He squeezed my hand.
I glared at him icily and pulled my hand away. "Are you here to talk to mom? She's gone out to the store for now, but she should be back soon."
"No princess. I don't think your mom wants to speak to me just yet. You can tell her I came if you want. I best be going. I just wanted to check up on you; see how you're doing. You'll get your birthday present the next time I see you," he promised.
"And when will that be," I asked hostily.
He looked hurt. "I love you princess." He leaned down and kissed my cheek. Then he closed the door, closing the door to my heart as he left.
"What was he doing here?" Zac asked.
"Don't ever touch me when my parents are around?" I exclaimed angrily.
"I can't even hold your hand? What's with you Aura? All you ever do is exercise and go to the studio. I haven't seen you eat for the longest time. Maybe the doctor is right."
"You're believing some doctor rather than me?" I couldn't believe this. Zac had always stood by me, even when I was lying.
"Well, I don't know what to believe Aura, everything's happening so fast."
Zac, nothing is happening. The only thing moving anywhere is your career. We stay frozen in time, hoping for something that will never come, and I don't know what I'm talking about." I quit my babbling and waited for him to respond.
He slid his arms around my waist, hugging me. All of the sudden, he pulled away. "Aura, you're spine is sticking out." He ran his hand down to my hip bones, which jutted out painfully everytime I moved. "Aura, you're so skinny. What's happening to you? Why are you doing this to yourself?" He looked at me concerningly.
"It's just that, I'm fat Zac. You don't understand, you wouldn't." I had no way of explaining what was going on inside of me. All the emotions that rushed through me every minute of every day. I couldn't deal and not eating gave me a sense of control.
"Oh my god, how can you do this to yourself? I don't understand why you would do something like this."
"You wouldn't," I accused. "Zac, if you tell..." My voice drifted off.
"I have to tell. I can't not tell someone, and let you continue doing this to yourself. This can't go on any longer than it already has. I can't believe I didn't realize this sooner. This is all my fault."
"If you tell I will never speak to you again. I don't care who you're doing this for, if you tell I will never talk to you again. I don't want to see you again if you tell someone."
Zac looked at her in disbelief. "Why is she doing this? Making me choose like this?" "Fine, I won't tell. But you have to promise that you will start eating again. I don't want to lose you Aura." He spoke softly to me, as if I were a child that couldn't comprehend anything that he was telling me. "Ok, I promise," I replied warily.
He smiled and squeezed my hand. Too bad for him. I wasn't giving up that easily. I had worked to hard for all of this to be thrown away just like that.
