"Hon I was so worried about you. I had no idea where you were until I thought about it. I know you stayed at Zac's."
"How did you know?" I looked at her in astonishment.
"You're too young to check into a hotel," she answered simply. "Were you there when I called?"
"No," I answered honestly. "And I probably wouldn't have went there, but Isaac and Taylor saw me walking and picked me up. They were going to drive me home but I told them no. So they drove me to their house."
"Why wouldn't you come home?" She looked at me in concern.
"I didn't want to."
"Alright, well you're grounded for right now. That means no seeing friends, talking to them on the phone; especially not Zac."
"What's with you? You look like you just won 10 million dollars or something." Taylor searched his face for an answer.
"Nothing," Zac said quietly.
"Bull. Now tell me what is up with you or I will burn those disgusting yellow boots of yours." "Yeah whatever Tay I wouldn-" The ringing phone interrupted them.
"Zac. Phone," Diana called.
"Got it ma!" Zac ran to the phone. "Hello?"
"Hi Zac." Aura whispered quietly.
"Why are you whispering?"
"I'm grounded. I'm not supposed to be on the phone, but I need to talk to you."
"Well talk."
"No, in person. I'll have to sneak out though"
"Ok, where do you want to meet?"
"Oh no my mom is coming. Meet me at Riverside Park. Leave now!"
The dialtone buzzed loudly in his ear.
"No, I'm going to go to the park is that ok?"
"No who are you meeting there?"
"No one," I lied. "I need to think."
My mom looked at me suspiciously. "Alright, but if I find out you went there to see someone, you will be grounded for life," she warned. I nodded and watched her leave. I pulled on my sweatshirt and ran out the front door.
"Hey Zac," I said.
"You're sweating," he observed.
"Yeah I ran all the way here."
"You ran? I could've got Ike to pick you up on the way." He watched as I shivered violently. "Here." He handed me his jacket. "You wear this thing more than I do, you might as well have it," he muttered.
I ignored his comment. "We need to talk," I said seriously.
"I've been thinking about you all day," he said with a smile.
"Oh." I gave him a half-smile.
"So, what did you decide?" He looked at me anxiously.
"I- uh- I don't know. Zac. You've been my best friend ever since I was four and I vowed to myself that I wouldn't let anyone or anything come between us. Now look what's happened to us, we've been torn apart by our own feelings."
"So what, you made me come here to tell me that you didn't know? Well, I'm sorry Aura, I can't wait my whole life for you to figure out your feelings for me. I've got better things to do than wait for you."
Each of his words ripped at my heart as he continued to pour out his anger to me.
"When you figure out what you want, don't call me. I don't care, I'm already over you. Jesus, I knew that passing attractions disappeared quickly, but I never knew they disappeared this quickly. You know what? I thought I loved you. Good thing I didn't tell you then. I would've just set you up for a disappointment."
"What do you mean you would've just set me up for a disappointment? I never even said that I liked you Zac. You think that you can have any girl that you want. But you know what? You can't. There's millions of girls out there that wouldn't date you if they were paid to and I don't blame them. I thought I knew you. I thought you were the sweetest guy I had ever met and you were, up until now. You know what? I don't really want to see you again. So unless you decide to quit acting like such a jerk don't call me. But if you do, you know my number."
"Aura, I'm sorry. I just.. it's just... I don't know. You know I like you. You challenge me. I love to talk to you because you make me think. You're so smart and opinionated and beautiful and I love you for all of your flaws. I think I love you. But I'm not sure because how am I supposed to know what love is? I'm not even thirteen yet and I may have experienced love. That's a little much to grasp. You believe in me Aura. Just when I thought we'd never get a record deal you came and told me if they didn't give us a record deal it would be their loss because someone else would." Zac stopped to take a breath.
"You love me?" I looked at him with wide eyes.
"I think so. Why, do you love me?"
"I don't know Zac, love is such a strong word. I know I like you. But I've always liked you as a friend. I just think that it goes deeper than that now. I'm just scared. Of getting hurt and of it not working out. What if this isn't love? What if we just think it is? Then what"
"So what? Do you think we should try being more than friends?"
"I don't know, will it ruin our friendship if it doesn't work out?" I asked fearfully.
"I don't think so. We've been through too much together to let something as unimportant as that ruin our friendship," he mused.
"Alright then. I guess we could try it," I said carefully a smile creeping across my face.
"Good." Zac kissed me softly on the cheek. "Then I have one more thing to ask you."
"And what would that be?" I said softly.
"Will you be my girlfriend?"
