She put her hands on her hips and stared at me accusingly. "Where are you going?" she demanded. She tore at me with her gaze.
"Uh, I'm going for a run... is that alright?" I wasn't lying, but I wasn't exactly telling the truth either.
She looked me up and down for minute and then sighed. "Fine. I don't want you going out so often Aura. I'm afraid that something will happen to you, you never know with a city this big."
"Mom, I'll be fine. I've lived here my whole life." I rolled my eyes and looked up at the ceiling.
"Be home soon, I don't want you out too long after dark." She placed a hand on her forehead. "Yep, bye mom!" I stood on tip-toe and kissed her cheek. I waved and ran out the door.
"Zac, are you sure you should be going out this late?" Isaac decided that now would be the time that he would start acting grown up and start worrying about Zac.
"Ike, what are you? My father? What are you so worried about? I'm not goin to get attacked or anything." Zac shook his head.
"Fine, you're right. Do you need a ride anywhere?"
"Yeah, that's be cool. I'm going to Jarred's house."
"Ok. hang on a sec. Let me get my keys." Isaac ran up the stairs.
Zac waited impatiently. He looked at his watch. He was supposed to be at Jarred's a half hour ago.
"Where ya goin'?" Taylor walked up behind Zac.
"To Jarred's. I was supposed to be there a half hour ago, but Ike decided that now would be a great time to play father."
Taylor nodded understandingly. "You need a ride?"
"You can't drive Tay."
"Not legally. I can drive though."
"Ok, let's go."
Taylor grabbed a set of keys off of the table and ran out the door.
I ran. I wanted to get to Simone's as quickly as possible. I had to tell her what had happened yesterday between Zac and I. Even though she was incrediably analytical, she would be happy for us. She had always said we were meant to be together. "Only another mile to go." I kept running as quickly as I could even though I felt like passing out. My breath continued to get caught in my chest and I felt like stopping, but something told me to keep going; some hidden obsession that comforted me and urged me and told me everything would be alright. So I listened to it. i kept going.
"Tay, we're going to get caught. And Ike's gonna have an aneurysm." Zac was riding on an adrenaline rush. It was completely amazing how good it felt to break the law. The thought of what they were doing was unbelievable, but the thought of getting caught was an even bigger rush.
"We're not going to get caught Zac, quit being so neurotic." Taylor stared at the rode ahead. "Hey, there's someone running up there." Taylor took his hand off the wheel and pointed.
"Tay, get you're hand back on the wheel," Zac barked.
"Who is that?" Taylor squinted and slowed the car down. "Hey, isn't that your girlfriend?"
"Aura?" Zac squinted.
"Well, that's who your girlfriend was the last time I checked," taylor retorted. He slowed the car to an almost complete stop and Zac rolled down the window.
"Aura, where are you going?"
I stopped and leaned over to the windows height. "Zac?"
"Yeah, get in." The car door opened.
"I'm going for a run." I answered breathlessly.
"Why?"
"Because I've got to be in shape for ballet."
"Girls," I heard him mutter. "Get in." He pulled on my hand and I slid over and sat in between him and Taylor.
"You can drive?" I looked at Taylor in astonishment.
"Not legally," he said with a grin.
"Let me out." I reached over Zac for the door handle.
"No, it's ok. I'm a decent driver, ask Zac."
I looked at Zac and he shrugged. "Whatever, but where are we going?"
"Well, I'm driving Zac to Jarred's house and you... wherever you want to go cutie." Taylor grinned at me. "When did you become such a petafile Tay?" Zac retorted.
"Shut up Zac," Taylor snapped.
I looked between the two brothers and grinned. I was always caught in the middle of their fighting. I felt something brush against my hand and looked over at Zac. He smiled and took my hand. I blushed and looked away.
"So, you two are an item now?" Taylor whistled lowly.
"Shut up Taylor." I hit him in the arm lightly.
"I missed you." I could feel Zac's breath against my ear. He kissed my neck lightly.
"Don't mind me," Taylor said sarcastically.
A flash of red and blue in the rear view mirror caught my eye. "Uh, Tay... look in your mirror," I said nervously.
"Oh shit," he swore. He slowed the car down and pulled over.
I watched as an officer stepped out of the police car and walked slowly over to Taylor's rolled down window. "I think they take their time to make you more nervous," I whispered in Zac's ear.
"Dad's gonna kill Tay." Zac's face was set in a grim smile.
"Uh.. what's the problem officer?" Taylor's voice was filled with nervousness.
"Can I see your license son?" The officer held out his hand.
"Uh.. actually, you see officer. I don't really have a license."
You don't have a license? Well, what do you have?"
"A learners."
"Well, where is the licensed driver that is supposed to be with you? I highly doubt that those two have a license."
"Well, you see... my parents weren't home and my little brother needed a ride to a friends house and-"
"Save it. I don't really want to do this, but I'm gonna have to take you's all in. My daughter is going to kill me. She loves you guys," he said embarrasedly. "Please get out of the car."
Taylor let out a deep breath and stepped out of the car. Zac and I followed suit. Zac felt around for my hand and took it in his. I pulled away from him and looked the other way.
"It's ok, everything will be fine." He slipped his arm around my waist. I shrunk out of his grip. "What?"
"Nothing." I shook my head and walked grimly towards the car.
"Ok, you're mother's here. You can go now." An officer pointed to me.
"Bye," I said softly to Zac and Taylor.
"Bye." Zac lifted his hand in a limp wave.
I walked out to where my mom was standing.
"Mom, I'm so sorry. This isn't what it looks like. I was just runn-"
My mom held up her hand. "I don't want to here it Aura. I don't want to hear it." She sighed and pushed open the station door. "Come on."
