Machines beeped noisily and people bustled around. I opened my eyes to find my mom staring back at me.
"You're up, I was so worried about you." She hugged me tightly.
"What am I doing here?" I asked.
"You fainted at the studio. You were lucky, the janitor found you and called 911." She smiled at me encouragingly. "They're just doing a few tests on you now to figure out why you fainted."
"Can't I go home?" I whined.
"Aura hon, I know you hate hospitals, but you'll just be here another day. You have a visitor," she said with a smile. She waved and left me alone in the hospital room.
A few minutes later the door re-opened.
"Hey Aura." Zac's voice was soft from the door way.
"Hey... what are you doing here?" I asked.
"I though you would want to see me. I can leave if you don't want me here..." his voice trailed off. "I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm grounded for a week."
"That sucks." I smiled sympathetically.
"Do they know what's wrong with you?"
"No, they haven't told me anything," I answered.
"Oh."
There was an ackward silence in the room. The air was so thick you could cut it with a knife. We sat looking at each other, neither of us uttering a word.
"It really sucks here. I've only been up 10 minutes and I already want to go home," I mumbled.
"Do you need anything?" he asked.
"No, I'll be fine. I won't be in here that long..." Zac looked down at me and smiled. "Will you hold my hand?" I asked quietly.
"Uh... yeah, sure." Zac's tone suggested surprise. His hand found its way to mine and our fingers intertwined. "So...uh..."
"What?" I asked.
The door opened again. "Hello Aura. I heard you were awake. I'm Dr. Epstein." He held out a hand.
"Hello," I said caustiously, shaking his hand.
He nodded towards Zac.
"Do you want me to leave?" Zac asked.
"Oh no, not unless the little lady doesn't want you here, but judging by the circumstances it looks as if she does want you here." He gestured towards our intertwined hands.
"He can stay," I said softly.
"Alright Aura, I got the results from the numerous tests we performed on you and they all came out negative so that rules out many possiblities. But we hav some ideas of why you fainted," he explained.
"Oh, and what would those be?" I asked.
"How have you been eating lately?" he asked.
"Fine," I lied. The truth was that I hadn't eaten for the past five days.
"Are you positive?" He continued to interrogate me.
"Yes I am. What are you trying to figure out?" I asked.
"Well it seems that you fainted from fatigue and I was trying to figure out if that was from malnourishment," he explained.
"Well, I assure you doctor, I'm quite well nourished." I continued to lie, hoping that it didn't show on my face.
"You're mother says that you have been exercising a lot. Could you be overdoing it?" he asked.
"No, I'm training for ballet and gymnastics," I explained. "I need to be in good condition."
"Alright, just make sure that you're getting a lot to eat. Rigorous training like that can wear down your immune system and it becomes easier for you to catch bugs that are going around," he warned. "I don't want to see you back in here again for a fainting spell," he joked. "The next time you're back here, it better be for the flu or something."
"Alright," I agreed.
"I'll leave. You just make sure that you eat properly and get a lot of rest. You're going to need it. I hope to see you on tv one day, you're mother said you're very good." He winked at me and walked out of the room.
"He winked at you," Zac said in disbelief.
"Yeah so, are you jealous?" I teased.
"Nah... you're mine."
"Sure whatever," I muttered. "Would you mind leaving Zac? I want to get some rest. I'll be home tomorrow... can I talk to you then?" I looked at him in question.
"Yeah, I should be going anyways. You get lots of rest okay? I'll talk to you when you get home... if I'm allowed to." He bent down and kissed me on the forhead. "Bye."
"Bye, I'll call you as soon as I get home," I replied. I watched him as he waved and walked out of the room. "I convinced the doctor that I was eating... good. I just have to be more carefull next time. He can't find out that I haven't eaten for five days or my mother would kill me," I thought.
