Incredible, veteran and very prolific guitarist, he
can play any style (you just have to take a look especially to his sessions
page to see how many different styles he can play), although I'd say his
best skills are on the jazz/fusion camp.
JOHN BARRY SEVEN
This was a r&b combo led by famous soundtrack
composer John Barry. In October 1963, Ray joins the band:

Avant-garde composer, Mike Gibbs has always used
superb musicians in his albums and bands, mostly from the British free
jazz scene. Ray plays in his self-titled album, Mike Gibbs,
recorded from September to December 1969, with a big ensemble, featuring
Chris Spedding (guitar), Ray Russell (guitar), Phil Lee (guitar), Jack
Bruce (bass), Brian Odgers (bass), Henry Lowther (trumpet), Derek Watkins
(trumpet), Kenny Wheeler (trumpet), Chris Pyne (trombone), John Surman
(reeds), Tony Roberts (reeds), Alan Skidmore (reeds), Ray Warleigh (reeds),

to compose the music for a TV series, "Rock follies", about a female trio
(one of the singers was the marvellous Julie Covington). Andy composed
the music, but a stable band was formed to play all the music as well as

This was a duo formed by Mike D'Abo and Mike Smith.
Mike D'Abo was a member of Manfred Mann. He also appears with Chris in
the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' album, playing King Herod role. Mike Smith
was the vocalist for 60s band Dave Clark Five. They recorded a very interesting
self-titled album, Smith & D'Abo, with great musicians:

THE SECRET POLICE
In 1981, several musicians and actors (from Monty
Python) arranged to play 4 concerts in benefit of Amnesty International.
There were great performers there, like Jeff
Beck & Eric Clapton (playing together!!), Phil Collins, Sting (his
first solo appearance, he still was in The Police), Donovan, Bob Geldof,
etc.
Pete Townshend, although appearing in the video,
was not on that year (1981)'s show, but the previous one 'The Secret Policeman's
Ball'.
The grand finale of these shows consisted of a
massive jam playing Dylan's "I shall be released". The unusual lineup

SIMON PHILLIPS (BAND)
Always the best of friends, Ray and Simon kept
on playing together, this time under Simon's leadership. They released
Symbiosis, recorded with Ray Russell (guitar), Jimmy Johnson (bass),
John Pena (bass), Mike Porcaro (bass), Mitchell Forman (keyboards), Wendell
Brooks (sax), Sheila E. (percussion), Chris Trujillo (percussion), as well
as Simon Phillips (drums), of course.
The lineup for the 1997 tour was:
But due to problems with dates, Ray is not able to
play the whole of the tour promoting the album, where he's replaced by
the mighty Andy Timmons.
After the tour, Simon started recording a new album,
Another lifetime, again featuring Ray. The album was recorded
with this lineup:
A great album, with intrincate playing. It contains
a tribute track (Another lifetime, co-written by Ray and Simon)
to drummer Tony Williams, who died while the album was being recorded.
The producers are Ray and Simon too.
The Japanese edition contains two bonus live tracks
(taken from their 1996 tour), but sadly, this is not the edition I have,
so I can't know if Ray is featured there (I don't think so, anyway).
