SADISTIC MIKA BAND - on tour with Roxy Music - October 1975

"If they were to tour Britain right now, they'd slay us" (New Musical Express, 1973) This October the Sadistic Mika Band tour Britain. It could well constitute one of the most significant rock events of the year - and this is not stated lightly. It's significant because this is the first time that a Japanese rock band has come to Britain, and Japanese rock, although virtually unknown in the West, is a force to be reckoned with. The Japanese music business is the second largest in the world, twice the size of Britain's, and produces pop and rock of an increasingly high standard, much of it a match for anything emerging here or in the United States. It's amazing that Japanese rock has for so long been ignored purely realising that existed. And the Sadistic Mika Band are almost certainly the best rock group in Japan, not only artistically but commercially as well - their album sales now outstrip those of the most popular Weatern bands there. They've recently topped polls in all the country's biggest music magazines. People have been saying for some time now that the next big thing in music must come out of Japan. The Sadistic Mika Band could well be it. |

Of course their success at home is in itself no reason why they should succeed in Britain. But they should find success here: because they produce music which is original, sophisticated, and above all excellent rock 'n' roll. Visually they're a tour de force. The Sadistic Mika Band is, indeed, a totally remarkable group, the combined talents of five of the best musicians in Japan fronted by a stunningly beautiful and slightly crazed girl. It's no surprise that Roxy Music, that most remarkable of British bands, should have asked them to support them when planning what is probably the most exciting British tour this year. The band has already gained a cult reputation in Britain through their last album "Black Ship" and also from their new album "HOT! MENU", released this October. The Sadistic Mika Band cannot be ignored. Whether you love them or hate them, you won't have experienced anything quite like them ever before. |
