a murder of one
"open up your eyes, you can see the flames flames flames"

I once read some review wherein the writer lambasted Adam Duritz for writing this song. He said the entire premise of this song was one of pure arrogance on Adam’s part. Who was he to assume that the relationship being mentioned in the song is a bad one? And what right does he have to say that she should leave (and possibly end up with him instead).

All I have to say to this guy is man? Do you have any friends? Why lambaste a man for simply "caring" for his friend’s well-being. It’s man’s nature to look out for those he cares about. That’s the problem with most people nowadays. Many people are so caught up with taking care of themselves(I’m also guilty of this myself at times) that they over look that some other people may also need their help. People are so used to keeping to themselves that to "reach out" to someone is considered odd. Isn’t that a sad thought.

The beauty of this song is that it’s such an "un-self-centered song" unlike many songs out there which often convey what the singer feels about himself. True, many, if not most of the Crows songs are very self-absorbed, but well, not all of them are. This is one of them. To add to this, this is a great up-tempo song, something that August could’ve used a little bit more of. Lyrically, it’s a very dynamic song in itself. It’s not very obvious in the album version, but in live versions, the song is made into a two way conversation, which makes it doubly interesting. In the live version, the character Adam is "talking to" talks back and asks "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people? How does it feel to be under the sun?" Two very striking questions which show just how vulnerable Adam is. These questions can be interpreted in many ways, I think they are asked in a sarcastic sort of way (sorry, I’m a pessimistic kinda guy). Sort of like that author, she(the character in the song) asks how is it on the other side, "you say it’s so bad on my side….well what about yours? How can you say yours is better?". And you know what? Ultimately, he can’t, he can’t say or claim that his "side" is better. But all of this isn’t the whole point or strength of the song (I know, I went on rambling too much). The whole point in my opinion is that ADAM CARED. He cared enough about his friends state of affairs and offered his help. That’s all he does in the song. And if we all just cared a little bit more about other people, looked out for others , things would be better for everyone don’t you think?

I read that you feel this song is very selfless, and totally about the girl in the song. This is true, HOWEVER, it is very important to recognized the transition that takes place towards the end. As adam sings "you dont wanna waste your life, darlin - change" he begins to stop thinking of her. He realizes that all the advice he has been giving her applies directly to him as well. The rest of the song is completely about himself. It is really amazing. Listen to it again think of this and let me know. He says "change" 35 times, and completely to himself.
